Plus2 value question

Hi

I?m new to the forum and after advice (aren?t we all!). Ive owned a plus2 for 6 years that I?m just not getting to use any more, so thinking of selling.

It?s a 1968 plus 2s in original red with the black vinyl interior. All original interior, exterior, engine and chassis. Paint and body in very good condition (last sprayed a good few years ago, no blisters etc), upholstery has a few splits (headrest and rear seat but nothing major), dash has one small crack in vinyl above, sun visors inners have perished. But it?s a complete plus2 (inside and out, bumpers, badges etc) and in pretty good condition but not concours.

As it wasn?t used for some time, spent over 3k having it recommissioned by local classic restorers last year and a mate is taking it for a run regularly (I brought it from the uk to Jersey where it?s garaged and I?m now back in the uk), but it needs someone that can spend more time than I can.

My question is the realistic selling price (the mate mentioned in Jersey is falling in love with it and interested) but I have no idea of their current value and what the market is like in the uk if I decide to bring it back over to sell - any advice appreciated.

All the best

Chris

An early +2 is a niche market and as an owner of one i believe the beauty lies in the simplicity.
In the longer term I think the fewer 'updates' from later models the better and as you mention 'originality' it sounds promising ! I think we would be astonished if it was still on the original chassis after 50years !!!
If it's A1 all round then the insurance value could nudge ?30k The market always has a number of 'bitsa' cars and that's where the values can tumble... .
It should be on webers and likely have no bonnet bulge , steel wheels , no spotlight recesses, early style dashboard and the less padded seats .. you mention headrests! (which sounds non-original).
Some modern updates are a plus , such as solid driveshafts instead of original doughnuts, electronic ignition . These should help sell it .
Get your driver to take some pictures . 3/4 angle both sides under bonnet , inside , under boot and bonnet and let us see them!
You'll have a very interested bunch of people who will look at them on this forum and give you their opinion . You may even have one of them buy it from you ;-)

Thanks Rich

I?ll try to get some photos taken to post.

Re the year, I was going from the registration documents which record as elan s2 first registered in 1968.

Cheers

Hi

A couple more details and photos (apologies they?re not the best shots, taken just before the recommissioning I mentioned in previous post, after not being used for a couple of years)

The frame number is 50/044x which possibly means a S1 vs S2 (which is in the log book)?
It does have the bulge bonnet (if that?s the bulge in drivers side) but no spotlight recesses
I think the wheels have been replaced, they?re not steel - knock on black alloys.
It?s still on original doughnuts and sure the original ignition vs electronic
Pretty sure it?s on Webber?s

Really after a rough idea of prices, to see whether price offered is reasonable, any guidance appreciated (after digging out the photos and seeing it again, I may well decide to keep !!!)

Cheers

Chris

very nice plus 2 ! I think you should get a lot of interest . its not an S . But that's no big deal . Honest looking '68 +2.
The number you've mentioned , is that off the aluminium plate in the engine bay ?
the 044x seems a bit odd .. i'd expect a 4 digit number ..
hve a look at elan registry under type 50 and you'll see what i mean early 1968 model around springtime ..

Thanks again Rich

The x at the end of the body number was me masking the last digit (I didnt know whether a good idea to share the last digit online) but yes spot on re the date - it?s May 68 on the log book (and I have the lotus archive letter in the cars documentation confirming the same)

Is there a ball park value I should be looking at if I do decide to sell?

Cheers

Chris

Imho Chris,
it's better if you just agree a price between you and your friend. It sounds like it would be going to a good home :)

Thanks both, useful starting points, if I do sell, would like mate to have it as know it would be going to a good home and I?d get to drive it now and then!
