Easy to put a Ford engine in. Maybe the Lotus engine broke.

The Lotus Twin Cam IS a Ford engine, with a Lotus alloy dual overhead cam head on it. Plus Ford bell housing, gearbox, differential.

Is that what you're seeing?

It was not uncommon to find Elans with ordinary Ford engines back in the early 70s - I had several, usually with 1500GT Cortina engines - as at that time it was expensive to repair a twin-cam properly and lots got bodged. I remember buying an Anglia van (which was a death trap) someone had put a smoky TC in, swapping it out for a 1500 from an Elan S1 and selling both for far more than I paid for them. That would have been around 1973, I think. Heady days. Too old now for such shenanigans. Yawn, where's my teeth?

....ah ah!

The Lotus twincam is actually a Lotus designed and built engine which happened to use a Ford bottom end mated to a Lotus twin cam head and bespoke front cover/water pump assembly :D

...just being provocative
