Mine is 7002040010N, which - if I'm getting it right - is a 1970, February, batch 4, unit number 0010, and Federal.

Now I'm really getting off topic, but . . . is the unit number continuous through the months and years? This appeared to be the case with the older 50/ type numbers. In other words, is mine the tenth car produced after the new numbering system change-over in January 1970? Or the tenth Federal car produced since the new numbering system, or the 10th car in the month of February??

Just wondering . . . :?

Randy,

Prior to 1st January 1970, the unit number sequence was shared with all models worldwide, i.e. 50/****.

From 1st January 1970, the unit number sequence is unique to the model group, i.e. 700101****L (domestic), 700101****M (export excluding Federal), 700101****N (Federal).

In answer to your question, based on unit number sequence your car is the 10th Federal +2 since 01/01/70.

Brilliant. Thanks so much.

According to the info in the LotusElan.net wiki, there were 2536 Plus 2s produced in the original numbering system. The wiki then lists unit #1990 as the last Plus 2S/130 produced. 2536 + 1990 would equal 4526 Plus 2s produced, which corresponds to the wiki's suggestion that approximately 4600 cars were made in total.

But that 1990 unit number from the last car in 1974 then must correspond to the 1990th L version, perhaps? Which would mean there are still the M and N version cars to be added to that total, no?

I would be interested to know what the breakdowns were for the cars shipped to North America, etc. That would require knowing what the last unit number of the last Federal car was, then adding in whatever number of cars were shipped to NA between 1968 and the new numbering system.

All so complicated!

Thanks for your help, though!!

Oh, if anyone owns 50/2527 - 50/2536 please let me know as I have 50/2526 as the last (except for 50/2552 that is). Remember things were simplier in those days without computers to keep track of everything.

Who is creating the Wiki?

2013L is the last recorded domestic,
0381M is the last recorded export (excluding USA),
0315N is the last recorded Federal based (USA/Canada) but I saw someone on ebay selling 0452N, so a reminder of my appeal on another page, if anyone owns a +2 from 0296N please get in touch with the Lotus archives.

Thanks,

Andy Graham

Early last year I wrote an article for the Club Lotus News magazine on how many +2 & Plus 2 Elans were built. 5261 was the final answer! Here it is for your information.
