driving position/wheel position

I recently drove an early plus 2, a 68, and the wheel felt not only slightly offset, but actually at an angle, i.e. with hands in the ten to two position my right hand would be further out from my body than my left.

I have previously driven a later car, and cant remember feeling this. Is this common? Was it more pronounced on early cars?

Many thanks

Just been in the shed for a quick sit and yes, there is 1/2" difference in the ten to two position and the centre of the steering column is pointing approx. 1" to my right of centre...

My Oct 73 car has a angled/offset steering wheel. John's number sound to be about right to me.

Would have thought it was the same on all cars, there was a change in steering column to collapsible ones on later cars but the basic setup was the same. A change in steering wheel diameter may effect how noticeable the effect is.

Agreed. I like my smaller Moto-Lita better than the stock wheel.

The steering wheel on my '71 +2S is offset as others have described. I have pushed the wheel as far forward as the range of adjustment will allow because the wheel lowers itself as it moves forward and I like a lower wheel as I'm only 5'8" in height. Unlike Stu I prefer the original wheel to a 14" Moto Lita because to me it lightens up the steering and feels more delicate. I did like the Moto Lita on an MGB I used for autocross because of the wheel thickness and quicker steering.
