The Project........

This is the project, but as with most things in life I don't have a bottomless pit of cash.......
I will attempt to keep the pictures coming through over the next couple of months or so but...... most of the work is straight forward really, but...........
What is the best way of actually finding out what this car was when it was new? Colour - trim etc......
Paint I can sort - engine and running I can do........
Where I am going to be lost is trying to find all those trimmy bits and interior, I have a parts list forming and as every evening passes it seems to be getting longer and longer.
Who are the best people to get in contact with ref trying to find seat covers - carpets - chrome etc etc......
A lot of points and questions there but if anyone can help that would be great......... I am based in Yorkshire and I do know a friendly classic MOT specialist if anyone is interested?!?!?!!
Thanks for your attention!
Regards Ben

Hi Ben, and welcome!
As you will see from a recent thread, there are quite a few of us based in Yorkshire - Boston Spa is pretty central, you'll find a few of us within an hour.
I'm sure you are aware of the big parts suppliers, most of whom can turn up most of the parts between them (Paul Matty, Sue Miller, Kelvedon, etc). If its something specific, try the site search facility - almost (!!) everything has been asked and discussed before on this site.
The Lotus archivist keeps what records remain, and he will help you find some of the details about original build. Try Andy Graham: [email protected]" target="_blank
Pictures really are where its at - keep 'em coming! Looks like a fair size project, there. Its an early car, I see from the reg. Is it complete, or are you missing bits?

Not managed to get into all the boxes yet but it seems pretty complete - 95% I hope!!
Seat covers throughout are dry and cracked and knackered and there seems to be a lot of that sort of story everywhere around the car........ rubber seals dash board, hoses etc etc ------ clock showing only 27000 miles though as to how accurate that is, well it has been outside under a tarp for a dozen years plus!!!!! so bearing that in mind it wouldn't surprise me!! It has been restored before and it is on an early spider chassis, which is still in great condition, the engine runs as sweet as a nut....... but the fuel pump is again knackered!!!
Could be a long job, got some old history, and I think concourse is not the way to go I feel a highly original useable car is best but with regret I dont hold onto cars........ I play and pass on...... not in it to make money but if a little tickle comes the right way then thats the idea!!
Thanks for the welcome and trust me I will make the promise now, I will keep the progress pictures coming as long as the help does!!!!!

Hi Ben,
Welcome to the family.
on the nearside front wing inside the engine bay, (it is on mine) there should be the "chassis" plate. Does this give anything like a paint code? This is an early elan so may be different to the later ones. Anything you can find will help us find the original colour. Then you have to find someone who can supply it. I have a classic friendly paint supplier near me in Poole. So they are about.
Good luck with the restoration, search the archives on this forum it will help!
Kind regards

Hi David,
I am really not quite sure what to say to you really.........
1)Honestly ----- Sorry!!
2)Well, if I'm going to be childish ----- ha ha.....
3)Selfish ----- Did you have to bid against me? it would have been cheaper!!
etc etc
4)Cocky ------ At the end of the day, at least I have one now....... you were trying be greedy and have two.....
etc etc etc
But thanks for your picture, if I can get a vehicle that has an engine bay that looks like yours when I'm done then I will be rather chuffed.A lot of work ahead!!

I think you have bought at a great price and love the colour combo too.
Interested in how you take it forwards, I have one that will end up as a 'high end' rebuild and another that is a 'runner' - happy to jump in and use it every day of the year - it is the runner I enjoy most at the moment, a car on the road is always better than one in the garage.

Nice project Ben
About the colour scheme, you might find more in the "famous" pdf file from Sports Car world with your serial number.
According to the reg number, your car seems to be a 1968 (please note I'm not a specialist of UK registration!)
Welcome
Franck

Nice project should keep you busy. Sport cars car world is a Dallas based parts supplier : http://www.sportscarworld.com/
They have nice collection of parts and spare's cars you'll be much better of using the UK based suppliers.
