what are people doing with these engines?......Im guessing trying to make money out of sticking them in Fords mainly....seems to be the big money earner at the moment......

Seen this one for sale a few times with the crossflow engine. ?4,000 but its a scruffy car in need of restoration and a Twincam engine. Does not look like good value.

I don't get it. It's not like the engines are rare.......hell, over here the transmission would be the hardest thing to find.

unfortunately I think the +2 as a project without an engine is still unloved.......
Im guessing that when the +2 reaches the same value as the elan then it'll sell.....
but projects with no engine and box don't seem to tempt people.....
Im guessing its the work needed....plus the ?4k to ?5k for an engine on top of the car price then plus restoration costs..........
its very do-able just not many people wanting to do it with prices at the finished top end being ?10k to ?15k...

Just out of curiosity, when a Lotus Elan/Plus 2 is missing it's gear box............where do you find one?
and, when it is missing a rear end........where do you find one?

The gear box casings are the same as Cortinas so look for old Fford parts suppliers. The Lotus close or semi close ratio gear sets that go in the casings are not common so that's a little harder. Quaiffe sell a straight cut close ratio gear set but it a little to noisy in the intermediate gears for the road.

The nose and gears of the diff is Cortina / Escort and a range of other Fords that used the same rear axle and the rear Lotus alloy casting is available new now.

However given that Plus 2 continue to be broken for parts value there should still be bits on eBay for a while

cheers

Take one Mk1 Escort 1100....

Evidently this car is a genuine Escort TC but there do seem to be an awful lot more around these days; that's where some of the engines have gone.

No it's not, Pete!

The lads wanting to create a fast Escort these days are focused on the Cosworth YB as giving the biggest bang for the buck, as with this Mexico that's been tweaked with this upgraded lump from a Sierra Cosworth. It's quite nippy, with nearly 400bhp on tap!

The Escort Twincam market is very closely monitored by the AVO club, and it's very hard to 'create' a new Twincam from an old logbook these days. Dead easy to make a car look like a Twincam, but without the provenance, a car appearing from nowhere is eventually priced accordingly.

But I'm afraid that there will always be a demand for a 'spare' twincam engine, for people wanting to replace a knackered one, or creating a race / rally car, or just having a spare as piece of mind.

So long as Plus 2s can be bought for the price of the engine, they will be broken for parts. It's sad, but I'm sure that there are quite a few genuine Elans, Plus 2s, Europas, Cortinas and Escorts that are still on the road because of a heart transplant.
