Hi, I just joined the forum as I have started a similar sort of project. My dad and I were looking for a project to do together. That was in July. Now we have got a complete road-going car as a model to work to (and to enjoy while the build progresses), a stripped bare shell and chassis ready for painting and a 'complete car' (without engine and gearbox) soon to be coming up to act as main donor vehicle (as it does not have a V5 or Vin plate). Fortunately, all three at 1968 models so we should have a reasonable chance of getting something that is reasonably authentic. I will post pictures sometime - hopefully getting some positive encouragement! I need to decide about what engine option to go for... :D

Hi Maddy

Best of luck with the project. Regarding info on the car as I think U said there was no VIN plate. Many of the early lotus models the factory builders used to carve messages and other info into doors, roofs, bonnets, and on the back of the dashboard and glove box. Looking at your picture there seems to be a headlining lurking. So if you ripped out that and /or pulled off the door panels you may find the serial number of the body. It will probably be a 4 digit number and was the end part of the body serial number the first 2 numbers would have be the date code 7011 for example. If you contact the Lotus Historian they can probably from the last 4 numbers get you basic original info on the car

With that U may be able to get a in period number and registration for the car and then get it sorned-- Just a thought.
best of luck whatever with the project

Bob

Maddy, I have removed my interior trim and found a chassis number written on tape behind a rear quarter panel. Unfortunately it does not match my chassis number which is authenticated by Lotus records. If you rely on this method, it might just give you wrong information such as mine. Kevin.

Very true; the body number very rarely matches the chassis number. lotuselan-plus2-f51/does-your-body-number-match-your-chassis-number-t18534.html

The +2 looks like a fun project!

It sounds as if you also have a fabulous collection of cars - post up some pics for the forum to drool over :P . Would love to see progress pics of the 'baby' Elan in particular?

By the way careful with calling it a 'baby' Elan some folks get a bit touchy about that term on here

Jon

I would like to see some photos too... of any of your cars. :)

Maddy,
Have you seen the advice above to speak to the professionals like paul mattys etc - they would be able to supply parts etc - that you need or even do some of the work for you.

I would visit them and see some of the rebuilt vehicles

Good luck with your project!
We've all trekked the same line !
