No Richard, I don't really think that smoking was the cause! But I know from several painful experiences that if you drop a lit ciggy on your lap whilst driving along, and it falls between you legs, then you have to get out to retrieve it. In a saloon car, you can move around, or lift your bum out of the way to facilitate retrieval, whereas in an Elan, your testicular devices burn until you can get out.

It's fairly common to see a ciggy burn on an Elan seat...right in the middle and about 6 inches from the front. I can feel the pain just thinking about it!

Considering that the early Plus 2s had 3 ashtrays in the front, this must have been a common occurrence!

Just another thing to beware of, amongst all the other technical obstacles we have to contend with!

Looking at the photos, my thoughts are only the v5, engine block and perhaps the gearbox would be of any use for parts ?
It can be seen many of the steel parts have deformed, an example is that the springs have given up supporting the car! The coils having softened and collapsed.
Even if parts look ok the heat would of changed the metals properties !
I personaly wouldn't use any suspension parts again, even the chassis looks deformed.
Also most alloy parts have melted, noticeably the rear wheel, meaning temperatures of plus 650deg centigrade.
And on the most expensive alloy part, the head, the carb mounting flanges have melted off !
I wonder if it was a electrical fire or fuel, obviously no fire extinguisher at hand !

Hmmmm...thinks...how long will it take me to delete 1440 posts?

On a serious note, the warnings and causes of catching fire have been spread throughout the archive. Some are well known, but I would like to see them consolidated somewhere. The +2 in question appeared well maintained & cared for...and now it's such a sad sight

From PMQ's about 90 mins after your post:

"Alex Cunningham (Lab, Stockton North) called on the prime minister to support his ten minute rule bill on bringing an end to smoking in cars with children.

Cameron referred to himself as a "former smoker". He admitted the smoking ban "has worked", but would have reservations about extending it to cover smoking in cars"

Children? What about testicular devices? :x

Looks like the listing has ended. I wonder why?

I was talking to Orsom Tim about burned out cars and there a lots of issues these days with safe handling due to the toxins produced when cars burn, some of which are very dangerous.
