I afraid the answer is as many mm as there are in a length of string........
Some beleive 200?
Some 400?
Some 1200?
1200 does only equate to about 23% of the total produced (5240)
I'm in the 1200 camp along with a few others including Wilkipedia  , we have 52 known cars in France on our register which to me would mean that world wide there must be 1200. There's a post on here where the number is "proven statistically"

You can also register your car on Jim's excellent registry http://www.elanregistry.org/index.php The hope would be that one day Jim's registry would be able to tell us

All the best
Terry

There's been a number of threads on this... and as Terry has said there's lots of answers. Probably the closest to a reliable estimate of roadworthy cars in the UK is the 2007 MOT test data which indicates that 224 pre 1974 elans passed the MOT that year. This includes both the 2 seater and the 2+2. At risk of starting a further debate, Robinshaw and Ross suggest that between 8,676 and 9,153 2 seater Elans were made and between 4,536 and 5,228 +2s were made. If the rate of wastage is the same between both cars, roughly 2/3 of the 224 would be 2 seaters (149) and 1/3 would be +2 (75). However I suspect that the balance works much more in favour of the 2 seater - after all how many 2 seaters or Lotus Cortinas have been cannibalized to restore a +2? So at a guess I'd say 40-50...

...and 92% of statistics are made up on the spot!

 Not necessarily! - I'm talking about cars on the road as was the OP - there's probably at least a couple of hundred stuck in garages in the UK that are off the road and not MOTd.

How many of the 52 known in France are on the road??

I think about 40 to 45 , I can't be sure as there are some owners who won't give us their details  We have owners on our registry with cars on the road that total 35.
You must have loads more in the UK! :D
Paul Matty normally has about 25 for sale!

Hi

I am agraid that my +2 (130/5) is amongst the garaged and not yet MOT'd group - although after seven years of hoarding parts I am hoping that change that over the next few years :)

Hi,

I`m new here, and this is my first post.

I just inherited the user rights to my fathers `70 Lotus Elan +2 S.
Been spending the last weeks getting it roadworthy and ready to pass the Norwegian MOT?d tests. It`s been sitting all alone for seven years in my dads carport, but I`ll be damned if it didn`t start after a few tries! :D

So anyway, there`s one more +2 here ;)

It`s, as stated, 1970 Lotus Elan +2S from California.
It has Stromberg carbs, without the crossover (for some reason) and is of course left-hand drive.

I LOVE this car, it`s been in the family since before I was born, and I?ve gotten sleazy hints that I was conceived in that car from my parents! ;) My best memory from this car is on a roadtrip with dad from Norway to the Netherlands, and the feeling of the downshift in the backseat (deafening!).

Anyway - it will be spottable around Stavanger, Norway ;)

I only have two cellphone picture right now, I`ll get my DSLR out and snap a few good ones when I can find the time ;)

This is right after I washed it. You can se the ropes we used to tow it out of the carport. It`s in better technical shape now than it was then. Check out the license plate ;)

The second picture is one I took before I took out the carbs, just for reference in case I needed to remove more parts off the engine.
