VIN number

PostPost by: davidj » Wed Sep 02, 2009 7:38 pm

Hi,

I had my car recently MOT'ed and have just received a letter from the DVLC wishing to clarify a few points, caused, I think by the MOT tester entering the chassis number incorrectly as 50/21920/2192 into the MOT computer.

Basically the DVLA wish to confirm the VIN number, from both the logbook and the chassis plate. On the log book it is 2192, while I have brought a new chassis plate and stamped it 50/2192, on advice of this forum.

Which is correct? I don't wish to to upset the DVLA and risk ending up with a Q plate!

Cheers,

David

David

No problem,DVLA realise 50 is the model number, they may want you to go to one of their testing stations (as I had to) but all will be O.K.
Do you have the dymo tape stuck in the body on the bulkhead?

I agree with John.. It is worth getting DVLA to alter their records to show the correct VIN number. I have just gone through this process and now have the correct numbers on my log book. It took a few weeks, but cost nothing except time and persistence. In my case a PO had reported a chassis change and supplied the Spyder chassis number, which is incorrect. The mistake went back twenty years, but is now corrected. You can also get a useful letter from Lotus that helps the DVLA to understand what is going on. An inspection may be requested, but just go along with it! These days, getting the paperwork right is worth the effort to avoid problems with MOT, insurance, police...

On the log book it is 2192

According to the list; chassis No. 50/2192 the engine number is I21020, 4 speed gearbox, colour red and built 12Nov1970 if these are the same this would help confirm the correct chassis number.

Yes, that is my car. It still has the original engine and is still red. I have never found the dyno tape on the bulkhead but have found reference to 2192 elsewhere on the body.

Am I correct in assuming the logbook should therefore show 50/2192 as the vin number, not 2192 as in my case?

I believe the list that Jason is refering to is Frank Bertrang's (of Sports Car World in Evant, Texas) Plus2 ledger that he transcibed into a .pdf document. Frank died earlier this year and his business webpage where they were posted is now gone.

If you know the original web address, you probably can find it here:

http://web.archive.org/collections/web.html

Very useful site, since people come and go, fail to re-register their domain name, etc, etc.

An interprising person could retrieve the data and republish it.

Hi, Just to confirm, so I don't upset the DVLA, the VIN/Chassis/Frame number on the logbook should read 50/2192? (without the ? obviously!) Could someone with an early +2 just have a quick look please.

Cheers,

Sorry mine is no good to you, my chassis number was changed to the Spyder one in the early 1980's.

Mine is '72 +2S130 and both plates (driver door and window) show 0306N, never the model number. I have other plate (engine compartment) but have not stamped it yet--original one missing so not sure if 50 on those. As an aside, I'd like that list, even tho doesn't go as far as my +2 as I remember but my S3 DHC is on there (send to [email protected]). Gordon Sauer

Hi

I have the same list Mark has posted on here, I did not know you could post a file that big on the forum, that would have been easier. :)
