Another early +2 bites the dust

RichC...try Classicar Automotive for the master cylinder...they know their stuff, and know Elans very well. Don't be tempted to put a secondhand one in...you don't know where it's been!

rong...Nearly imposible to mend the old interior lights, the lenses just seem to crumble to dust! Keep an eye on eBay as the Ford Zephyr Mk 3 ones turn up fairly frequntly, and they are the correct ones for the rear, and the lens is the correct one for the front. Worth getting a spare in as well. I've bought the last few that came on for about ?5 each, and two of them were absolutely mint.

Jason,

Just looking at the pics of your pedal box.Does the car have support brackets within the car,top of driver's footwell? The Lotus Parts Manual shows several variants but I have never seen them.
Anybody know where I can get some? (Sue M does not have them)

Where did you get the top for the brake master cyl, I've been looking for that type of extended plastic top for mine but can't find one.

They are always on Ebay see Item number: 220406714533 the listing does not say what size it is so you need to ask. I paid ?6 for mine.

Does the car have support brackets within the car,top of driver's footwell?

I think the manual is a bit confusing as there lots of different boxes. i will try to take a pic under the dash over the weekend.

Hi

Pic of extension, note part number on top.

Pic of drivers side pedalbox; the only bracket is the one attached to the parking brake. I added a few penny washers to try and make a more secure mounting.

Hope this helps

Thanks Jason for the info on the caps.

I see another early car has been broken up :( - Unless the owner has resurrected it with a different shell perhaps

How many Plus 2's do you reckon are being broken for spares each year?

Hi,

All this chat about early +2's biting the dust has given me renewed enthusiasm to get mine back on the road. Just spent this morning re-fitting the differential after 2 Yrs and hopefully get the shafts back on next week.

Will upload some pictures soon.

On another subject, does anybody know where I can get the seats recovered in a similar vinyl to the original?

Hi Lee....good to hear of another being resurected. Sue Miller does upholstery kits....you can either fit them yourself or take them to you nearest friendly upholsterer to do.

I've seen probably 10 Plus 2s a year being broken on eBay over the past 5 years or so....probably the same again not on eBay that you see at Stoneleigh and Donnington.

I'll bet half of the cars didn't make it beyond 15 years old, leaving 1700 or so cars. 20 or 30 or 40 a year being broken over the past 10 years (in the UK)? Leaving maybe 1400 cars. Out of the Plus 2s made, I would guess that a third of those are pre-S type cars...leaving 450 'early' cars. Probably a quarter of those roadworthy...100 cars....spread out over UK, Europe, USA, Australia, New Zealand & Japan. Maybe 30 - 50 early Plus 2s in the UK that are safe from the scrapper?

They are probably the most rare Elan!!

Hi Everyone

Maybe we shouldn't get too paranoid. Consider the 1960-63 Ferrari, a lovely looking car with beautiful Pininfarina bodywork. 2+2 though, so they're worth a fraction of what the the 2 seaters go for and are all chopped up for their engines or to make GTO replicas

Hi

Yours is now the 5th pre-'S' Plus 2 I've seen / heard about that has non-switchable lights in the rear, so it's sounding like that is the correct setup.

Sounds like I we will have bidding war again on Ebay  there was a point when I was constantly getting out bid by one bidder over every part I wanted.

I also saw those new Cortina ones that some one was making for ?30. But they were made of clear plastic so did not look right.

Hands off the Zephyr lights

Jason, I'm sorted on the lights now...so no more bidding from me!

I just received a Zephyr Mk 3 interior mirror as well for ?2....same as the early Plus 2 and S3 Coupe. Not easy to find, but nobody else wanted it!!

With all this talk about the demise of the early +2's I thought I would post a picture of mine which moved out of the garage under it's own power for the first time today. Can anyone recommend insurance in the UK?

Thanks,

David

Stunning, I love the roof very jealous.

Are they the later seats in the car? What year is it?

I suppose Adrian Flux, Footman James and Lancaster are the main ones but I cannot recommend any of them as I have not had to claim (touching wood).

I used Peter Best before.

I have used RH Specialist Insurance Division for some years now, although I also haven't made a claim, they are very competetive on price.
They're based in Brentwood.

Jason,

The sun roof came from fleabay but it took ages for one of the correct size and condition to come up, most are to big. I then had to bend the bars as they were the incorrect radius and I felt bolting them straight to the roof could crack the gellcoat. To be honest I would prefer no sunroof at all. I only fitted it as it came with an awful glass sunroof!

It has the later seats and tranny tunnel; as I have mentioned before it is a ex states car converted (almost) back to the early uk spec by the factory in 1970. Consequently it originally had high back seats but (I think) the PO replaced them.

Here is another pic.......
