When I went to the MOT the mot man put the car on the emissions machine out of interest we got:

1.25 CO which is good but a hydrocarbon reading of over 2000!! car runs and drives fine, explains the unique smell the exhaust has.

A modern cars hydrocarbon readings pass level is 30 apparently.

Any thoughts as to why its so high, I think thin oil and unburnt fuel plugs do not fowl up so I am not too worried.

I think that if you remove the breather pipe (block to air box) and vent it to atmosphere, you will find your HC readings will be reduced.

On my previous Elan, it was the valve guides.
