Wrecked Elan

Currently listed on Ebay there is an Elan R/H door for sale. One of the additional photos shows a completely wrecked Elan (early S4 DHC?). Looks like a very sad story for someone, hopefully without too much personal injury. A reminder of how little protection there is to the occupants of our cars.

Well two things; fiberglass fractures rather than crumples for one. This means that while it absorbs the same or more energy than sheet steel it looks worse because it's no longer present. Second, the rescue squad is anxious to avoid moving the people with injuries unknown. They will, therefore, cut away any part of the car to facilitate the removal of the occupants (often the roof). The mess that remains after rescue often looks far worse than it was. That said, it's a very small car so God help them we pray.
We are supposed to be having fun, are we not?

I have a spyder rear hoop with side intrusion bars in the car I am restoring. I had considered leaving the side bars out, but having seen the picture I think I will reinstate them.
Has the car next to the Elan been shot at?

The fire brigade are known for the conversion of anything to a convert ~able.
It's what their training is and in displays too.
The only one I saw give them trouble was a saab 99~that 70s saloon with the triple folded pillars. Jaws of life uprated nowadays.
Glassfibre monocoque as per early lotus, ginetta, and minari /alfa (worked there) pretty strong actually from damage I viewed . Now carbon fibre used to good effect instead.
A front ended lamborgini countach revealed tubes like a school desk and pretty much no protection for the drivers feet... Saw Just fresh air.
Ps supposed to be Glassfibre specialist @ stoke prior, worc

What are these 2 rods which appear to go right across the car from one rear hub to the other?

Probably, just not used to seeing it in that position
And again, I hope the occupants were OK.
