The BBC's engineering research and designs department was my first job on graduating. There was a program at the BBC of wiping used video and audiotape for reuse to 'save money'.
Countless hours of irreplaceable material was lost.

Indeed.
The same thing happened here in NZ.
A huge amount of material that , appropriately marketed, would nowadays be worth mega bucks, and provide a nice income stream for the foreseeable future.
No doubt the "managers" who oversaw it's destruction got bonuses for "saving money".

When he died his massive video tape collection contained many supposedly lost forever TV moments.
