Paul Alexander (Elan66) has a stash of old London branch Club Lotus magazines. The magazines are titled "Lotus Position".

I have scanned one particular magazine circa 1985 please click on the following link, as it's too large a file to upload to the forums https://www.dropbox.com/s/pb9tiqfqkcsez ... n.pdf?dl=0

Apart from it being quite a good read with some fascinating adverts for example steel flywheel @ £65.00, vernier timing gears @ £46.90.... there is an article on page 19 about a concours event judged by Malcolm Ricketts in which I noticed he had given an award to a car that he owned Climax Elite 910 CBL, affectionately known as Cybil. I'm not sure that Malcolm owned the car in 1985, but it was too good an opportunity to miss to rib him a little at Castle Combe about it.

One of the other vehicles awarded a prize was a Lotus Sunbeam DAC 89Y. By sheer fluke Paul dug this out of the Castle Combe bootfair on Saturday.

I think it's expired now, but £25 would have bought a few bits back then it seems.

Have to admit that I just could not resist the urge to Google “Lotus Position”. When I found out what it meant I was a little disappointed. I was hoping for something more!

A similar event was sponsored by Len Street in 1986, held at the RAF museum, Hendon. Graham Arnold was there to give a talk and an ex factory employee called Mike (can't remember his surname) gave a talk on rebuilding the Elan twink. I was the overall winner of the concours with my Roman Purple Plus Two. Didn't win a voucher but was presented with a huge trophy. I remember asking if I had to return it but the dealer laughed and said no it was mine to keep! His christian name was Ashley. Jim

DAC 89 Y - only around 30% of the UK sold Sunbeam Lotus cars still remain, but DAC 89 Y is one of them.

The owner lives in Hertfordshire & is a long time member of The Sunbeam Lotus Owners Club

Hi Robert,
Do you know the owner or how to get in contact? Might be able to get Paul to part with the magazine and certificate. The real fun thing would be to get the car to go to Malcolm Ricketts BBQ later this year and ask him to re-present the award.

Thanks for the reply - I do know the owner & can contact him. I will ask if he is ok for me to send you his email address. In fact he actually lives quite close to Malcolm

Reading through that old edition of Lotus Position has brought back some fond memories of those times,

I ran the NW London area meetings at 'Ye Olde Greene Manne' and my brother Dermot was involved in the production of the magazine. We are listed 4th and 7th on the grid printed on p.23.

We had three Lotus between us back in 1985, I had an S2 Elan and my brother had a Plus Two 130/5. We also went halves with a 61 racer which we both raced in Pre'74 Formula Ford.

Happy days!

I've contacted the current owner of DAC 89Y & await a response

Thanks for posting that Alan; very interesting adverts! Is Vulcan Engineering still going I wonder? Their toothed belt water-pump drive was a great solution. Eagle Racing started out with Lotus but then became Eagle E-Types and are very big-money E-Type new build operators these days. Henry Pearman, iirc.
