A new Lotus experience, going slow.

PostPost by: ericbushby » Wed Mar 23, 2022 8:23 pm

Today I was going to Malham Tarn in the Yorkshire dales to join friends for a easy six mile walk.
The weather forecast was good so I went in the Elan.
A sunny morning, mid week and out of season the roads were very quiet. Using narrow country roads where possible except for going through Settle and saw very little traffic so I drove gently and quite slowly 50 MPH max. No one else about and nothing to overtake.
I used none of the cars abilities and just tootled along,- it was a superb trip. 70 miles there and back in peace. I even managed to listen to the radio when not going up a hill.!
Find some quiet roads and try it, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

At those speeds with the roof down and on a half decent road, an Elan has a magic carpet ride.

I'm over the other side of the Pennines, stop by if your passing.

Hi Rob, thanks for the invitation. If I get a chance I certainly will. That also works both ways, although I would not have as much to show you as you will have. However you would be made welcome.

A slightly different experience but my favourite way to go slow in an elan is on a cloudless clear night, back country road, thru field or forest, top down.
The sounds you pick up on are unrivalled. Kill the ignition for a bit and coast. Try it, you'll see, or hear to be more precise.

Are we on the right website? Maybe the Oldie would be more suitable

Eric we must get together, I'd love to see your S3.

Paul are you stopping off with Richard on his way back from Duns?

Hi Rob,
I would certainly fit the profile for The Oldie. I qualify for that!
Don`t invite Paul to your place, he will be holding up all the trucks on the A1.
After doing 46 years as a travelling service engineer at 30,000 miles a year covering Scotland, Northern England and the Midlands, going slow is not easy for me.
Look , I had a factory to get to in the morning and a home to go to every afternoon, you can`t hang about.
Maybe one day,
Cheers

Hi D,
On an open road I have only just realised it is OK to go slower than that. A new enlightenment !
It could be that the old age is kicking in at last.
Cheers

Eric as I am also an Oldie as the years go on it seems to me to try to keep up with your age whilst on the road - thus I have to keep up to 80mph!! D

Daer Mazzers - very well, covid free - fully jabbed - off across lots of France because we like them, and then on to the Italian Lakes for mucho vino and nosh. Going over the Alps - no tunnels for us so if you are about keep well to the right as we are coming through! Then back through France again. D

When? We will be doing something similar, we're going to Rome, but through Austria and Switzerland. We're attending Classic Le Mans on the way back and then spending a bit of time in France. It's looking like mid-June till mid July, will our paths cross?

Mazzers - I think so! We will be at the Hotel de France in La Chartres sur le Loire on 27th June and again on 7th July. Not going to the classic, been there done that and we don't much like crowds. D

Hotel is old Le Mans team base, Astons and Ford GT40s and so on.

Funny, I have a picture of my Elise parked where you are stood taking the picture.

I've never been, I bought the tickets pre-pandemic and they just keep rolling over year after year.

I'll email you with some possible dates for drinks and dinner :-)

And I am prepared to put up with your abuse for driving something more modern
