PostPost by: pharriso » Wed Feb 09, 2022 11:58 pm

As promised I have scanned the catalogs provided by Charlie (FattoGatto) in this thread https://lotuselan.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=50370.

Engine Catalogs:

And a bounus pdf file, obviously from an American company, but can anyone identify where it came from:

You really have to admire the scope of the development work done by Vegantune. its a pity a lot of the knowledge was lost post their collapse. Also a pity I cant buy an engine for those prices these days :)

cheers

Reading the articles it looks like George Robinson was responsible for all the development work, not only on Lotus Twin Cams, but also developed the VTA engine & the Evante, incredible that one person did all this. Anyone know what happened to him?

I hope he had a long & happy retirement, but given Vegantune went bust I fear that didn't happen....

Rohan
I was talking with a guy only about six weeks ago that was selling two VTA units, one a wet sump 140bhp and the second a dry sump 175bhp with all the dry sump kit with it, both in good running order. He sold the first at about £5000 and the second at around £6000, now whether in todays market you would consider that good value is another matter, but with that nostalgic eye to the past, I guess we all look at the prices now and say why didn't I buy then. Of course when we also recall what we were earning then, some of those prices were stretching our pockets, but nice to recall some of the good items of kit around and of course some of the guys too.

I used to live not too far from George's place at Cradge Bank and used to pop in if I was passing, but always amazed when talking with George and his son (Chris?) at the mind and thinking that George possessed. Having moved away in the 1980's I lost touch and was surprised a long time later that the firm had gone bust and as I understand it, due to external issues and pressures. I did meet the guy who purchased the name and took it to Finchley, but I can't say I was overly impressed at his credentials, from a discussion with him at a show when we met.

As is often the way, companies such as Vegantune reach prominence due to a key individual within the business, but when their involvement ceases quite often the business never seems to be the same afterwards. However, for those of us that have met some of these people like the Daniel Richmond's, Richard Longman, Graham Hathaway, Terry Hoyle and Bob Greens and many others of this world, it was a pleasure to spend time with them, watch and learn.
