Lotus Elan

The abridged saga of my Europa lunacy

By coincidence the company for which I work makes turbine blades for a division of P&W.

I'll get back to filing the paint off the face of some rear hubs

Hi

Fantastic work. You are certainly going that extra mile and having "fun" at the same time. Keeps the brain and body working. Well done you!

All the best

Thanks guys! If anyone has any questions about machining I would be happy to answer.

I am trying to wrap up bodywork in the coming weeks on the twin cam before it gets cold. I am going to chat with a local mold maker this week about getting some help on future parts. It is a big undertaking to make the molds and I think I might be able to knock out a set of S1 doors much quicker with an extra hand...This is a real nerd point about the Europa, but the S1 doors look the best of all because they don't have the strange angles of the window frame. They are also the lightest because the windows are plexiglass and can be removed (no heavy motors etc). They fit the twin cam body just fine.

I mentioned previously that I have 2 S1A cars from 67 which are in various states of disrepair. The green one is complete, but was butchered by the PO when he removed the rotten frame. The S1 Europas have the frame bonded in place which makes repairs a nightmare if they are damaged...The red car was purchased more recently and was mostly complete, but missing boot, bonnet, windscreen, and engine to mention a few parts... I am planning on making molds of the S1 boot and bonnet for this car to make panels out of carbon because I am still looking for more practice... Eventually I will restore both because they are special little cars and not many were made. They are the lightest of any Europa, and look the best in my opinion.

Another mold I did was the tail section of the S1. I used the green car to make a mold of its tail which uses a special Carello tail light from a Lancia for the red car because its tail was smashed in. The S1B started the trend of the XKE S2 rear light which ended up on the S4 Elan.

Hi Chuck

Have you ever talked to a mate of mine Richard Mann here in Melbourne. Known locally as the Europa Man for his habit of collecting old Europas. Still has a 47 he will one day finish the restoration on. Also has a couple of Elans sitting in his shed also

cheers

Hi Rohan,

The disease I have with Europa hoarding.... I am sure it came from him! I know Richard Mann from the Europa forum. He has done some excellent work developing suspension ideas for our cars. In order to use a CV axle one has to add a top link to the rear bearing carrier. He documented the whole process very thoroughly. The 47 is a dream of mine.... I hope he gets it finished soon and enjoy it!

Hi Andy,

I love the red. I am going to paint one of my S1A Europas red one day! How do you find it compared to the Elan?
