Replacement Fuel Tank

First off, this is a note of advice and in no way is it a criticism of any supplier. I bought an Aluminium petrol tank, gasket and sender unit a few months ago. As it is now assembly time I ordered the screws and 3mm diameter nylon washers. I looked over the tank and noticed the tapped holes were a bit larger than 3mm. I fitted an M5 screw into the tapped holes. I mentioned this to the supplier and he confirmed that the tank is tapped M5 but the screws and washers are for the original OEM tank design and are smaller in diameter. The suppliers are reallly helpful and are sending the correct sized items so all is well. Just be aware that sometimes small details can change on replacement parts.

I think I could write a novel about replacement parts that don't match/fit/assemble like what was originally in my car. I'm glad you were able to get it sorted out.

Well I have come now to not expect any part I buy regardless of supposed origin and whichever of the suppliers I get it from to actually just fit as it is supposed to.
Everything I buy seems to need fettling or altering in order to make it fit...Seems to be the norm unfortunately!

Actually, the original studs fastened to the original tank are 1/4-28 fine thread, which is larger than either 3mm or 5mm and they accept 1/4-28 nylok nuts which then hold the tank in place.

I was highlighting the fit between the tank and the sender unit (6 screws). I think you are discussing the 3 off petrol tank to body studs.

My new sender came with a black rubber gasket which just bulged out and leaked. The supplier apologised and sent the correct cork replacement for free. But the time to drain the tank, remove and replace is just the price of running an Elan.
