I actually used to transport my FV on the back of a VW Combi. The belly boxes were a great place for parts storage. Even with a warmed over engine, it was a rolling chicane on hills. If it was a boat, it would have been marked as a hazard to navigation.

There was a wonderful picture in Motor Sport to accompany an article written about a London Cabbie who went into racing late in life. The picture was of a VW Combi with a SuperVee on it and the article was entitled "How to get ahead in motor racing".
The driver was Ronnie Grant. The two mechanics were two young chaps called Patrick Head and John Barnard!
Ronnie was pretty good. Used to hold his own or beat a chap called A Senna in his day.
I'll find the photo and post it.

With April Fool's Day safely behind us, can anyone accurately identify the Type Number of the car who's nose is sticking out of the canvas?

Thanks,

Its gotta be a 20 or a 22. I suppose it could be a 27, but I think by 1963, the team was being run by someone else, not Team Lotus. I also, w/o verifying my words think that Team was running multiple cars by '62 and probably w/ a multi car transport, so this leads me to believe the photo is a 20.

I really love these photos

These days you see a huge transporter more like whats used for a modern F1 and orders of magnitude better than any of these for a amateur ( but rich amateur) couple of Porches turning up at historic sports car race !!!

My Elan on the back of a trailer pulled by my 20 year old Landcruiser that I role it off is more like the generation of the photos true historic racing

cheers

Revisiting this thread to ask, how the heck did guys get their cars up on these high transporters?

I suppose 4 to 6 guys could simply list an open wheeler. But they also carried sports cars. I have found one non-Lotus transporter pic with tracks snaking out on trestles, but that sure looked unreliable. So how they loaded and uploaded is a mystery to me. John

Ramps, tucked in below the car. Used to carry my FV that way.
