i was just reading these paint stories and remembered my europa JPS (black/gold) 5 speed which i bought for 1500 deutshmark! it stood in front of a house for 14 yrs - there was gras growing thru the floor! no paperwork, just a receipt, customs closed on saturday, 14000kms on the dial! however my old race mechanic pal and his trailor knew all the illegal or unpublished roads into switzerland and we didnt get caught. so i started taking it apart and noticed: i still had stuff to do on my elan, so forget it: i tore the engine and gearbox out and sold the rest for the same 1500.00! sandy

Great story, those were the days when our cars were still affordable and a cheap way of getting a Twin Cam engine! At the risk of getting a second 'pedant of the month' hat (oh - that was Classic and Sports Car - sorry) the Twin Cam and TC Special Europas were the Type 74 - only the Series 1 was the Type 47 :D .

In the mid 80's I bought a rotten Mk 2 Lotus Cortina for ?700, I kept the engine and then sold the rest of the car for ?300.
