A beautiful job Phil, I know how many many hours go into getting the engine bay straight!

Do you mind me asking why you changed the head?

Cheers
Iain

Phil,

1. What holds your bonnet down? I don’t see the rear latches.

2. How do you keep the temp sender conduit so shiny?

3. How did you end up with Webers? All Federal Sprints came with Strombergs, right?

No problem, my car came with the head discussed in this thread - https://lotuselan.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=43120. It was an unknown entity re: valve sizes & cams, It's a good head, but I managed to buy a relatively unused Sprint head from Europe a few years ago & it looks more UK/Euro stock. I wil probably overhaul the old head & sell it.

Good eyes! This was the last remaining job when I took the picture, the bonnet also isn't in place...

It's only 6 months old

Yes my Car was built with Strombergs, but the head was changed over to a Weber one prior to 2008 when the car was restored by a previous owner.

Today I just purchased a magnaflow muffler from 4wheelonline. I also started rebuilding the master cylinder.

Had a rite of passage today.

It all started when I was enroute to a vintage car cruise-in that happens monthly near me. I thought the sky looked threatening, so since there is no wiper-motor in the Plus 2 at the moment, I checked the weather-app and saw a forecast of thunderstorms all day. Oh Dear. Since I had later commitments, I decided to turn back and head home. Along the way home, it happened. For the first time since I've recently started driving this car, somebody asked what it is.

Woman in passenger seat of SUV at stoplight: "Sir? What kind of car is that?"
Me, a bit surprised: "Lotus!"
Her: "It's so CUUUUUUUTE!"
Me: "Thanks..."
(Light turns green and I'm off)

Made my day, and it's a damn-sight better than how with my former Turbo Esprit everyone asked if it was a Delorean!

Wired up the new high performance starter (from RD Enterprises) and the engine that was rebuilt 40+ years ago turned over for the first time electrically! And I just got a call from the tire store that the XAS tires that were not supposed to arrive for 3 more months have arrived! I have to get the wheels painted. Progress is good.

Took SB1416 to Lime Rock this weekend for VSCCA driver training. The car way outperformed its driver. Although it does have a little kerfuffle going that makes both keeping charge, and keeping adequately low operating temperature waiting for green flag, incompatible objectives. Hmm. I think this means both alternator and electric fan analysis. But heck, nothing to complain about its dynamics.

Meanwhile, 26/4996 wants work done on an S2 style interior. Currently flummoxed by re-creating a foam crash pad, elephant skin, and modding the doors to drain out rather than in.

I chiselled out my old spigot bearing and replaced it with a fresh one from Sue Miller. I then fitted a Borg and Beck clutch kit with shiny new bolts and lock washers.

I test fitted my engine and gearbox into my Spyder chassis.

Problem was fitting the sandwich plate - I gave up and will have to do it all again. The chap who sold me it told me it came from and Elan’s TwinCam, but I couldn’t get it to sit happily with the rear engine cover. Mine is a lip seal, 6 bolt crank engine - perhaps this is for a rope seal model? Any tips? I thought I could cut away the blue plate where the upper edge of the bulge hits the bottom of the rear cover?

Correct, the block plate you show is for a rope seal. Attached pics are what you need for a lip seal engine.

I think Burton have them. The clutch slave cylinder area does need some fettling but otherwise they are good

I did consider that but the flywheel is quite exposed at the bottom and we have a lot of gravel on the lanes so I thought I’d better have something there.
