Brian Buckland 2nd Edition - update and requests

PostPost by: gherlt » Thu Mar 08, 2018 8:21 am

Hi all,
an update on the 2nd Edition.
Brian states that if nothing happens he needs one week more, a few updates/corrections here and there and he will be finished.

As the first edition was done in MS Word (text) and in Publisher (pages with images), it was my work to put the files of the first edition together as base for the second edition. This is also finished. Word does not like it in one (very) big file, so it is still sliced into chapters. Benefit is the "easy" creation of an index for the first edition which will be available soon for download.

Also, as soon as Brian finishes the writing, printing the 2nd edition will need some time, first we will have to look where to do the printing. Any suggestions are welcome. The printer should be able to do the printing of a ringbinder version and a hardcover version. Cheap and good ones, please ...

Now I want to ask owners of the first edition to report suggestions of improvements, all kind errors or whatever complaints. In this lotus-talk-f50/brian-buckland-book-reprint-t39474.html thread owners suggest updating some parts. Specific indications would be nice, adding comments to this thread or by PM.
All proposals go to Brian first, as he is the writer. Would be great if we could do some crowd sourced improvements on this important book.

And finally, until second edition is out, for those who cannot wait a few months I will put a reprint of the first edition in Amazon. It will be A4, thin paper, binded, softcover, with integrated index but otherwise FIRST edition only.
Price will depend only on printing costs of Amazon (at 600+ pages do not expect this to be cheap).
Ringbinder will be 2nd edition only.

Again, open to to suggestions and proposals, either here as comments or by PM.
Thank you very much

Thanks

I?d echo Seniorchristo?s request for an appendix to be offered for sale to enable those who already have the first edition to ?upgrade? to the second edition.

Thank you to you and Brian for putting this together - invaluable.

A supplement to the first edition should be a priority-I would be happy to buy it.
After all it has been the support of the past purchasers that has driven the demand!

When Brian was here for LOG 32, I suggested the way of removing the driveshaft from the front of the car under the tranny. Simple easy and fast. He said he would check it out.

There will be a supplement to the first edition, consisting of the newly revised engine section.
I hope we can do with the same paper as the 1st edition so you just can put it into the ringbinder as replacement pages. But it is not yet clear when or how or how much.

Top priority is the 2nd edition as a book or a ringbinder.

I have to mention that this revision takes a lot of man hours from Brian (please remember he is 74 now), meanwhile I am doing a lot of work myself trying to speed things up and making it easier and cheaper to print.
Both of us are doing this as a service to the Elan community, we both do not wish to make money with this.
But also, losing money is not an option: the amount of investment (many ??? !) needed to put the book into production, is quite important.

So, again: we will do a supplement, yes. But we need to concentrate on the full book first.

Guillermo - one suggestion would be to note known shop manual errors at the beginning of each chapter. A good number have been id'd in these forums, and I'm sure Brian has noted most of them.

There can never be enough pictures, but I know there is no way to include many more in a printed edition. It would be great if Club Lotus could be convinced to house pictures not used in the book in some organized fashion on their website (referenced in the book). Might also prompt some memberships for them.

You refer to Lotus Workshop Manual or Brian's Book errors ?

There will be a website for Brian for some additional comments/articles/details, for contacting and ... more pictures.
Brian is very attached to Club Lotus, me too, but then regarding hosting pictures I would not mix things up, for two reasons: Club Lotus should not grant server access to thirds and I would not like to depend on indirect access and limited control to picture storage. When something goes wrong you like to have instant and direct access ....
