What is a steering wheel worth?

PostPost by: Lotus 50 » Sun Nov 12, 2017 11:17 pm

Someone on another car board asked me what a 'signature' steering wheel is worth. He is a Lotus wannabe and somehow started by obtaining a steering wheel.

It certainly depends on condition, restoring costs are 120GBP for new leather, 50GBP for new foam/rubber (2016 prices by Len Chandler, add postage).

In the UK Ebay in september one in bad condition and without hub sold for 245GBP (item 282657616613), another one sold for 680 GBP, this one (142507099409) in good condition, but also with hub, horn and horn button, with nowadays represent a value by itself (200 BP ?).

Also depends on whether it's an Elan or plus 2 wheel

I have one from a '69 Plus 2 and I was offered $800 for it a couple of years ago, complete with (Lotus) horn button, one small rip in seam.

...just to give you an idea of the "value".

The one on flea bay was a 14 inch Chapman signed and looked in reasonable condition. Went for ?310 which seems and bit low?

Just for the record is it true that a 14 inch wheel is Elan+2 and a 13 inch wheel is Elan? I have a 14 inch early wood wheel.......Thanks! Eric

If you measure the outside of the wheel rather than the center line you may round up the diameter to the next size up - bottom line there is a one inch difference between a two seater and a Plus 2 original steering wheel, which shows at the junction between rim and alloy (the smaller hole is closer to the rim, so that it gets hidden by the thumb pad when fitted).

Anyone know what/where the 13 inch wheel (measured to the outside diameter of the rim) may have come from ? Europa ? I have one that needs a re-furb & was thinking of getting it done to try a slightly smaller wheel in the Elan. It looks the same as a 14 inch original Elan sprint (Vinyl) wheel with the later style centre, but not signed. It came in amongst parts for a series 3 DHC, but was obviously not correct for that, & I've always been curious as to it's origin.

Cheers, Tim

Out of interest which size is rarer 2 seater 14" or the +2 15"?? i know the 2 seater wheel is more desirable but as it can be used for both?? but has anyone got any idea of numbers produced of each??

Also i noticed the Black +2 wheel prices have started to creep up too, i saw a Black +2 wheel go for ?300 not long ago which was a little surprising.

Just to set the record straight, not that it really matters, this "wannabe" has owned 7 (seven) Lotus cars over the years and has stripped and rebuilt 2 (two) - both of which are still running. :P :P :P

(one of which has a signature wheel on it and is driven by a father and son in New Hampshire). :D
