type 23 are very nice cars indeed - then I was told authenticity is as tricky if not more than that of 26Rs... plus that 1600/TC powered versions are not period F eligible in France (only 1100cc or possibly 750cc), so would have to race with later cars or under 2l prototype.

I agree authenticity seems to leave a bit to be desired.
When I talked to Michael Oliver (he of Lotus 49 and 72 books fame) he was at the time researching for a book on 23B's, that was a number of years ago now.
However he did say that a few folks who had paid good money for them had got a pig in a poke. Seems the cars were not genuine.

Not sure if he has produced the book yet, so buyer beware.

Doug.

There really isn't an issue with Type 23 cars, 26R cars or any others that could have been faked / cloned / replicated / created form an ID. Just talk with the appropriate registrar! They know their stuff and will soon put a prospective ebayer right.

Sandi,
Contact the Historic Lotus Register (UK based) or the Lotus 2 3 users group(US based). I have single seater versions of the 23. Some things look right on this car, some do not.

But there is no chassis number or any mention of this cars actual history. I am available for PM.

I inadvertently added to the 23B serial number fiasco back in the eighties. I took my damaged 23B frame to a guy in the US to have it rebuilt. After doing some preliminary work he assured me that the chassis was beyond repair and that a new frame was required-unfortunately I went along with this on the understanding that the remains of the old frame would be scrapped. When I acquired the car it was fitted with the McLaren M8 body from George Eaton's CanAm car! I fitted a 23B body supplied by Peter Denty. The engine was a Pinto unit when I got it and I fitted a Twin Cam-from a Works Escort. The gearbox was from a Brabham F3.
I sold the car in California to a restorer who restored it for Gil Nickel-Yes, it is that car. I subsequently learned that the original chassis had been rebuilt and was now racing and using the same serial number! We live and learn...
