The Lost Lotus: Restoring a Race Car

PostPost by: Stevie-Heathie » Mon Nov 14, 2016 10:28 pm

For UK folks: Channel 4 at 8pm this Sunday. Should be worth a look.

"Philip Gleinster and Ant Anstead restore a Lotus Elite from the 1950s which they plan to enter into a classic car race at Silverstone."

Sitting here when I should be out in the garage, but I did a quick search and came up with this that "looks pretty close.''

"Although I would not try to say that I have produced an EXACT match of the colour, the very nearest match that we could see turns out to be a TOYOTA colour, reference 521."

Found here: http://forums.autosport.com/topic/52144-light-green/

That and a quick snack done, I'm headed back out to the garage. :)

The auction house commission would have been about 15%. The auction houses do very well when a car sells...

Ah yes, I found that they charge 12.5% which added to 108,000 comes to 121,500.

One of the CLOGs discovered this car round the corner from him a couple of years ago and was negotiating with the widow on it for some time. Then it was gone- you know where to.

I was surprised at ?40K for a disassembled incomplete project.

I see from the auctioneer's blurb, that Malcom Ricketts was involved in inspecting the shell to decide if it was in good condition, which it was.

Remarkably little of the real renovation work was shown in the TV program, and some was 'faked' i.e. it showed Ant welding part of the roll cages, wheras the auctioneer's blurb says it was made by ..?.. (a specialist roll cage firm).

Nice demo of a Coventary Climax engine in its original role.

Elite projects rarely come up for sale. A few months ago, on behalf of a friend, I looked at an Elite project close to Newcastle, that needed a ground up restoration, I believe it sold for ?35k+, so ?40k for chassis number 9 (wasn't it the first Elite to be sold?) with excellent race history...I think is about right, maybe even on the low side.

There have been a few road going Elites for sale over the last twelve months, they've all sold now, no more have come onto the market, I think there are just a few FIA racers for sale at the moment.
