I have been watching a twin cam engine on Ebay which has just sold for a mere ?1365. Sounds like a bargain, which I'd have placed a bid!!

Without an inspection and/or knowing the seller ( which of course you may have done/do) it might be ?1.3k worth of scrap.
Of course, a matter of opinion :D

Real bargin. Looks to be out of an escort or cortina as the dipstick tube is at the back of the block.
Simple to fix though!

yes, I had seen it too, and wondered why even bore size could not be measured with a head off ... could be a bargain for someone willing to take the risk.

I used to take the risk and have a bunch of useless heads and blocks to prove it :( . I also got some bargains
An average it was OK I guess provided you bought enough and applied a little basic judgement... like never buy a cheap part from a racer as they are selling it for a reason!

I now hardness test heads and thickness check blocks before I buy no matter how cheap

cheers

There's an old rural saying; "never look a gift horse in the mouth", and its pretty true.
Way back in 1983 I bought a complete twin cam engine with webers still attached for $240.00AU, it came out of a Cortina, and the bloke just wanted enough to buy a pushrod engine to stuff back into the Corti.

Yes, it needed a rebore, head work, and all the usual engine rebuild work... but it was an absolute bargain, it is now 65,000miles since that first rebuild in '84, and the twink is still going strong. I have attached a pic of that clunker $240.00 twin cam sitting snugly in the S2 elan engine bay.

If the dipstick is at the rear of the block does that mean that it may not be an L casting??

My 701M L block gas a blocked dipstick hole. The blocks were used with the belly of the sump at the rear.

Used on Escorts, I believe.
