The London Classic Car Show is showcasing Gordon Murray and the McLaren F1 as the "Greatest Car of the 20th Century".

In a press release Murray was quoted:
"When we started work on the F1 we benchmarked all the existing supercars from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche and so on, as well as aspects of cars as varied as the contemporary Honda NSX and the 1960s Lotus Elan.

The idea was to better the performance, vehicle dynamics, handling and ride comfort, whilst producing a car that could, genuinely, be used every day.

We achieved it all? except perhaps the steering. The F1 gets very close but doesn?t quite better the purity of the Lotus Elan?s steering,? said Murray."

High Praise indeed. Here's some additional Gordon Murray comments from other interviews.....

What are your top five favorite cars of all-time?

Lotus Elan Coup? S3
McLaren F.1
Lotus 25
Fiat 500 (1957)
Porsche 550 Spyder

If you had to choose only one from those five cars, which one would it be and for what reason?

Lotus Elan

The Elan styling is perfectly balanced and works from every angle. The packaging is sublime and it is still unreservedly the best sports car I have driven.

What?s in your garage at home these days?

Ten cars, all of them under 900kg. Two Lotus Elans, Frogeye Sprite, Rocket, Smart Roadster, Porsche 550 Spyder Replica, Fiat 500, Renault 4 and the Ford Cortina MkI I drove today ? bored and stroked to 1700cc, twin Webers, Lotus Cortina suspension.
