I've had an eBay account for 13+ years and I've seen fees steadily hiked from if I recall correctly 6/7% as they've cynically grabbed a stranglehold on the market. I think comparing them to an auction house is a bit unfair as eBay don't have to show/display the goods on their premises, pay for heat and electricity, do the marketing take photos etc you do all that for them! I think most eBay users think that they've become greedy and risk shooting the golden goose with their fees. It just needs a rival to take a foothold and provide them with some competition. Unfortunately they are so big (their economy is bigger than some countries!) that they'd just buy out the rival. Do you know they own gumtree now? How long will it be before they put FridayAd, exchange and mart and the like out of business and then they'll start charging for all adverts on gumtree!
Cynical moi?
13.5% is still less than all of the auction houses I know about. They also charge if you pay by card so this is similar to eBay.
You are obliged to offer PayPal but on expensive items I state cash on collection only and haven't been pulled up yet. PayPal is convenient for me and I factor in the costs when selling using Buy It Now.
The charging of 10% on postage was a response to people trying to cheat the system by listing items cheaply with a high postage, but it is a blunt instrument and catches everyone so this is, IMO, a bit of a cheek. However, I simply add 11% to my postage costs to cover this charge.
If not happy with eBay, use an auction house for your stuff. You will get less for your items and pay more in commission. I sell a lot on eBay and many items have gone overseas. With the whole world able to bid prices are pushed up higher than you will get at a local auction. Plus you have to transport the items and pick up if not sold.
I agree that competition may reduce costs but having to check two or more sites for stuff would be a pain so I will suffer the extra cost for the convenience.
Before eBay, my old car stuff tended to be scrapped. Now, almost everything gets sold and I wish it had been around 40 years ago
