Elan Stuff (table)

PostPost by: abstamaria » Sun Apr 12, 2015 8:56 am

A friend of mine is making a table based on a twincam head I gave him sometime ago. The head has a damaged chamber. He envisions that the table legs will look like the front suspension towers of the Elan frame. A glass top will rest on the legs. I am quite excited to see it finished.

I had a weber head swallowed a nut and beat the number 3 dome up pretty bad ?..took it to a welder who filled the dings with aluminum and resurfaced the dome with small curved files and its still on the 7

Yes, looking at the damage, I think the cylinder swallowed something similar. Until he gets around to that, the head will be safe in that table. I'm curious to see how it will turn out.

I once totally destroyed the dome in a cylinder head when I dropped a valve in a race engine. It was repair welded economically and very effectively and used again on a race engine for many years and is currently in my spare head stock ready to use - but you do need a good welder who does not put to much heat into the head. The quality of the weld metal laid down with my head repair was better than the rest of the head casting

These days with new replacement heads available it may not be economical to do a repair like that but it will be a nice table until you need to consider a rebuild :D I love Lotus "art"

If you want to swap it for a "soft" head I have that I dont think is economically repairable I am happy to help :D

cheers

I wouldn't volunteer to be moving that about too often, it must weigh a lot!

.............................MK I head sand casted -- good castings and a fine product: a friend of mine welded one of my mkI heads and was excited to see how good the homogenous integrity (i studied here in german) of the casting was. he?s repaired f1 parts, hewlands, dfv fords, ferrari gto stuff etc. but also ralts, dallaras: the "regular stuff" and was surprised! late night greetings from the alps sandy

The frame is made of light gauge tubing, so I don't expect it to be heavy. My friend is finishing the welds, and will send photos shortly

When I had QED build me a motor in the late 90s. they used a new head on an old "L" block. I am sure this old head, which I gave to my friend, can be repaired some time.

I dropped by my friend Nene's home this morning; the table is almost done. He wanted my opinion on the powdercoat color, so we agreed that. The frame itself is quite light. He will put a 1/2" glass plate on top, so with the head, that will add some weight. I gave him a Lotus chassis plate that should look great on his table.

My friend Nene sent me this photo, declaring the project completed. The head sits on a brushed aluminium plate riveted to the frame. The plates reflecting the ceiling colour in that photo. That's a black Lotus badge installed on the plate.

It looks very good, I think.
