Anyone have this book?

Gentlemen of schoolboy French should not throw stones.

The author and the publisher have out witted you.

A French book - Yes
With French spellings - Yes

But they have adopted the English spelling of the French word.... And you didn't even notice!

English spelling of which word? :?

Passion? - Same in both languages

Restauration? - To my knowledge doesnt exist in English other than "restoration" or "catering" but I am losing my English faster than I learn French.

So what word are you referring to?

Could it be a difference between English and American English perhaps?

Do you perhaps mean the symbol & for the contraction of "et" ?

The accent aigu is not used when the vowel is capitalised so "Elan" was correctly written in both English and French

My village hasput the accent over the E on the roadsigns but they are inbreds and dont know any better

My computer wont allow me to place the accent above a capitalised E

My schoolboy French was never any good, and I too was taught that the capital letters generally did not have an acute. Now I did understand that it was generally, so I did look this up before posting.

French capitalisation rules are very different to English.
The acute is omitted from the capital letter by choice where it is superfluous
The acute is retained for the capital letter:
a. where its omission would cause confusion with a similar word
b. Where the word is a proper noun

Elan and ?... The name of your village are proper nouns ( so maybe the good villagers are just French)
I understood that Elan came from the French ?lan, so would be ?lan in French.

N'est-ce pas?

I have two copies of the book (one with a damaged back) It's an interesting history of a rebuild by the owner. I say 'interesting' as his car's chassis suffers from the 'common' front suspension tower rot at the bottom but he just cuts out the affected area and welds in a new section ...

There is another French Elan book (which I don't have ...yet), looks like it more on 'exchange' parts..

Salut Carl

I remember seeing that but thinking no more of it. Google found this:

Reproduction du catalogue de pi?ces de rechange ?dit? par Royal Elys?e sur la Lotus Elan

So a copy of the French importer's spare parts catalogue. However it's only a 58-page softback book - either everything is printed really tiny with no parts drawings or Colin didn't think it worthwhile supplying froggie Elan-owners with spare parts; much better to flog them a Europa with their own poxy engine in it. No wonder we/they don't like each other :D

Salut Vernon,

Any plans to go the the R?trofestival in Caen at the end of June. We have been there for the last two years and it would be good to meet up with another Elan owner...

Salut Carl

Maybe next year (do remind me). We've booked the removal men for the 7th of June so we'll be pretty busy ! Just checked he distance, too - it would take at least 12 hours one-way in the Elan. I wouldn't say I'm under her thumb but I do hate the repurcusions of suggesting something seen unreasonable in her eyes

We drove to Morges near Geneva from the UK in the Elan for 5 years.. what's 12 hours. Switzerland might be easier for you and it's a good day (I also know an amazing restaurant on the way for dinner) :D
