Another Elan lost.........

The fires in San Diego claimed an S2 that was undergoing a restoration. The fire took all the bits and pieces, including the engine, trans, diff and suspension, etc., along with a significant collection of motorcycles, machine tools, power and hand tools. Lots of other collectables and un-replaceable goodies were burned. The good news is his S3 Super Safety, Plus2, Esprit and Caterham were in another building and not touched by the fire.

No. The car belonged to another long time Lotus fan, but I don't believe he is a member of this list. We have not had much time to talk, but I believe several twin cam Weber heads were lost as well.

The lot was in a good sized metal building, used as a work shop and storage for all the things we can never part with. The older small house he was currently living in, the new home, under construction, total garage underneath, and almost completed, were saved. The new home had the majority of the cars in the garage.

As a fellow North County Elan owner, I truly sympathize with the loss of the cars. My area was engulfed by smoke for two days from the fires on Camp Pendleton. If I did have to evacuate, the thought of leaving my Elan S4, Plus 2 and several Europas behind would have been heartbreaking.

Turns out the Esprit was in the building with the Elan. But, the Weber heads had been moved up to the house and were not lost.

One lesson learned, make sure you have adequate insurance on vehicles that are under restoration, or waiting for restoration. That includes cars and motorcycles. The insurance is really cheap. Be sure that you increase that value as you progress with the restoration. Also, make sure you have large dollar equipment, mills, lathes, etc., listed on your homeowners insurance. In my friends case, he only had a maximum dollar amount for all personal property and it will not begin to cover what was lost. And, he has to prove the value of what was lost to get that maximum coverage. He is still waiting for the insurance companies decision on/if there is coverage for the building.
