I don't think it's guaranteed prices will remain high. in my opinion, rises over the last 3 or 4 years in the UK have more to do with the fact that no traditional account-based investments were giving any decent return. Therefore the money was going into art & wine & classic cars. Once the mint examples increased, that trickled down into basket cases, as restoration became more viable. Also, unlike property, there is no capital gains tax.

Once interest rates rise, & investors put their money into safer (!) places, I would expect values to level out, or drop a bit.

Let's see in 5 years - who knows what could really happen!!

Art,

No kidding. An Elan on our side of the pond is one of the great values out there. We are relatively lucky!

We had a pretty extensive discussion on Lotus pricing recently on a US based mainly Elise / Exige forum recently. They are not really 'classics' yet here, as product run in NA was 2005 to 2011.

Consensus seemed to be the Elige pricing is stable to rising here as we no longer get the cars new in NA. Young guys are looking at them now as good value. The supply of good cars is getting less. About four years ago there were quite a few very low mileage Elises for sale as guys found they just weren't what they expected, impractical, to hard core, etc. Now the market is real enthusiasts that know what they are getting. :) We didn't get the S1 Elise (although some have been brought in and converted to Honda engines), so they are not in the pricing mix.

Anyway, they seem to be set to be a 'future classic' in NA. Pain in the butt is we can't bring them in from the US to Canada, so about a $10K to $15K premium in the Great White North.

Hi all
The rise in prices in things like art, high end property, antiques and classic cars is down to quantitative easing.

The money has been pushed into the economy and as always when money sloshes around in ends up with the money people who have lots of it to start with.

When the stock market hits a high as it has, the rich have to look at places to spend the profits and as always the poor get priced out.

The only good thing is rare parts get re-manufatured as money is no object and some benefits trickle down to us peasants.

But if you assume that even an Elan requiring total rebuilding is going to cost 10 - 15k and that a full, back to Gel Coat Repair / Repaint is 8 - 10k and Mechanical Rebuild anything between 5 - 10k, a finished price of 30-40k is not that un-reasonable.
It is only now that the Cars have that sort of value that it is worth doing them, you only have to look at what has happened to the +2 values over the past year before that you could only just about give them away unless they were in exceptional condition.

I know this forum is for Elan's and I was looking for one, thats why I joined this forum. But here the price of Elans here has gone though the roof. From AUS$28k to AUS$45k in the last one year.
Instead I went for an Elise S1.
In Australia there are not even many Elise S1s left. I had to do extensive looking and waiting to find one, it took me one and a half years. When I did buy I bought and above average one and payed above average price for it.
It is recommended for Elise's this does not mean a low K unit, best to buy one that has been though all the problems and has had them thoughly fixed.
Over 65ks is best. For example mine has been through the HGF and had a new head and MLS with larger valves and Piper cam fitted. It has had the plastic side radiator replaced and all the many other things done.
