Hello,
Thanks for everyone's help about my Dad's car.
For my non fiction M.A assignment I'd like to write a bit about the name - does anyone know why it is called LOTUS?
Many Thanks
Best Wishes
Jo

Thanks for your reply Keith - the original film on that post doesn't play any longer - do you know what it was?
Was it an old interview with Chapman or something?
So I gathered, from that chat thread, that Colin Chapman got the name from some loo roll called 'Lotus"?????
I thought it was going to be more poetic than that!
Best Regards
Jo

I think its a 'nobody knows' answer
the only person who would know would be Hazel.....

The name was also discussed on an other forum and below is the conclusion, apparently Hazel did give an explanation/comment on the name.....I have not read the mentioned book so I have no idea if it is an accurate quote

Not a loo roll but the ceramic toilet fixtures produced by a firm called Lotus.
However I strongly suspect that Colin Chapman just said that (having noticed the coincidence) to cause a persistent annoying interviewer to buzz off.

Jo, if you're looking for a more poetic background to the choice of name it has been claimed that Colin used to refer to his wife, Hazel, as 'my little Lotus blossom' and chose to commemorate it by naming the company 'Lotus'. It seems that it's one of those situations where you pays yer money and takes yer choice.

Sorry Jo, I am not able to give more details as the quote I referred to was taken from a thread on the Piston Head Forum, below is the link although it is three pages long and got quite heated at times, the quote appears near the end of page three.

From the mouth of Hazel's best friend, told to me last year (link below), I hope to see her again at the Enfield Pageant this year and I can ask her a few more questions, in particular about her book. Cynics will always argue that black is white so pointless in me proclaiming that this is the definitive answer, they can think what they like.
