The inspiration for the name "Lotus"

PostPost by: abstamaria » Thu Feb 07, 2013 6:18 am

David Mirylees in the Lotus-cars mail group discovered this video which provides the only known explanation for the Lotus name. The revelation comes 2mins 35secs in the video.

I don?t know if I wanted to know this.

'Makes a refreshing change".

So Colin named his car after a bog roll holder.

No John, don't go there!

Just how many brilliant ideas were born whilst sitting on the crapper?
I've given birth whilst there but not to top ideas as such. :D

Hey ho...

Of course it could be that Colin had got pissed off at all the questions from the film maker and made up an amusing answer to get him off his back.

The other related question is why all the models start with E,bearing in mind the last revelation maybe he should have produced the Lotus ENEMA.....

Took this in France in the 80's, taken from the driving seat of my Lotus Elan Sprint: how interesting...

I have always thought it was the only position that allows you to make love in an Austin 7. Well, I was told (or read) this many years ago and have never heard the sanitary story before.

But It didn't come from the horse's mouth.... so it can go on the pile with the others!

On the other hand, and apparently overlooked, is that the plural of Lotus is pronounced Lotuses - @ 3:43 - You don't get more definite than that!

Agreed, but it would explain Hazel's reluctance to tell us :-)

At a Club Lotus meeting in Coventry (1978 ish) I was fortunate to be in conversation (at the bar of course) with both a Mr. Graham Arnold (60s Lotus Sales Director) and the guest speaker, a Mr. Gerry Marshall (of Baby Bertha, race Elans and 'Only Here for the Beer' fame).

Both Graham and Gerry had downed a couple by the time I got round to asking the question: "why Lotus?"

The answer surprised me! And I have never forgotten the moment.

Laughing at my amazement, Gerry said: "if you don't believe us then go ask Hazel and watch her face."

Now both Graham and Gerry had known Colin and Hazel intimately through the formative years of Lotus so I had no doubt then, nor do I now, that the answer they had given me was true.

So, from that day the thought was always with me while driving my various Lotus cars that (if true) I was actually driving a sh*ggi*g position: and only Hazel knows...

And Hazel has never said! I DO hope it's true!

And several years later I saw the 'lotus' poster in France... happy days.

Yes!, that's who told me, back at a Club Lotus meeting in London around the same time. It's great to have a brain kick and collaborative evidence :-)

Now, they were a couple of characters. Not many around these days as they wouldn't fit the corporate image required.
