Italy - first two weeks in August?

PostPost by: JJDraper » Fri Jan 27, 2012 8:55 pm

I'm taking the +2 for sojourn in Italy in early August. Do any of our Italian members know of any events/sites which may be worth visiting (or avoiding!)? I intend going a little further south this time, perhaps as far as Brindisi (relatives).

Any advice gratefully received!

Jeremy

I reside between the UK and Volterra,Tuscany - depending on your route and preferences I can recommend some superb trattoria's,enoteca's in superb suurroundings from Lago di Como, Bergamo (beautiful old town), Verona and the Trattoria Pompiere (the favourite of the Women behind The River Cafe), to Borgheri and its wines (Sassicia) lesser known than its Tuscan cousin Chianti.

If you haven't before - Marenello it worth a pitstop for lunch at Ristorante Cavallino - so much history and if there on a GP Sunday the Audotorium Enzo Ferrari opens its doors to the town and you watch the race Gratis with the local Mafia, excellent atmosphere.

La dolce vita it is.

I went to Volterra last year, fantastic Lotus roads all over the area, we had a rental Fiat 500 which only just made it up some of the hills, just watch out for the hidden Italian speed cameras in the bushes!!
The Piaggio museum in Pontedera is worth a visit.

Hi Jeremy,

If you take the route to Verona you will pass Lake Garda which is a beautiful spot and near to the Mille Miglia museum. In this area too you will find many local wineyards. When you come down to Milano just head east for Venice and keep coming off the motorway, you will find some really nice places to visit. The more towards Venice you go, the less it costs. Hotels and food are very attractively priced.
After Venice (you can't get into Venice by car, there are multi-story car parks near to the taxi boats that will take you into Piazza San Marco) Once you visit Venice you can head South on the A13 towars Bologna then down to Florence and the cut across to Pisa and then down to Volterra (possibly meet Colin !!)

If you ever get stuck, you can call me for spares  Colin did !!

Ciao Gino
