Elan 50th Celebrations Silverstone Classic

PostPost by: trw99 » Thu Dec 08, 2011 9:36 am

I've started this thread as a follow on from the "All Elan Race at Goodwood in 2012?" thread, as it is increasingly looking like the Silverstone Classic 20-22 July (http://www.silverstoneclassic.com/page. ... 91A449D6F2)
will form the main focus for celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Elan.

Silverstone will provide us with a good deal. We get to show off our cars to many other classic car enthusiasts. We should have an Elan only race. We should also have a dedicated parking area for Elans only. We also hope to have a CLES presence to act as a focal point and meeting place. The date is good for summer weather (we hope) and the location is as central as it is possible to get. The Classic is also a great event so there will be much to see and do.

At this stage we are still talking with the organisers and making arrangements. However, I believe it would be prudent for us to start thinking about what we can contribute to make the weekend special. Certainly it would be good to get an indication of those who would be interested in racing there; it would also be helpful for anyone to volunteer to help us out!

One final point, if any listers from other parts of the world would like to attend, perhaps some of us on here in the UK would be willing to help with travel and accommodation, in a spirit of Elan friendliness!

Please feel free to comment or suggest ways we can make this a superb celebration.

I will race if it happens. One of us should proably keep a list of potential racers as they are not all on this forum. My guess is that such an event would be open to both roadsports and FIA app K cars.

It would be good to get some European and possibly cars from further afield - it is a great event and if we can have a grid of 50+ cars it would be quite spectacular.

I'll forward a link to this thread to my contacts in Europe, perhaps Christian could alert his Elan-racing friends in France, although as it closely follows the Le Mans Classic maybe their cars will be "tired"?

If all goes according to plan, I will be joining also from Greece. The paln is to do the LMC and then come over to the UK. Perhaps leave the car with a specialist for a look over amd the go to Silverstone!

I hope it works out!!

That's grand, thanks guys. Paul, Dave should be in touch with you soon.

I've just had a conversation with the organisers and subject to getting the Ts crossed and Is dotted it looks like we will have an Elan only race; 20 mins practice on the Friday, 20 mins race on the Saturday and a 20 mins race on the Sunday. Dave is contacting as many racers as he can to get expressions of intent to race.

I'll let you know more as we get the info.

For those of us who don't want to race our 'little' cars around Silverstone (as we don't have crash helmets, roll bars, foam filled tanks etc etc) can we not have a 'parade' around the track in much the same way as E-types did earlier this year. Lets see how many Elans we can get on the track at the same time. I think E-types managed a little over 700 cars at Silverstone (about 1000+ at the event), but Elans are not so common ... :D

Dear John

Please click on this link and then go back to sleep: http://www.lotus60thanniversary.com/

It'll be alright when you wake up, I promise! :)

We are talking with the event organiser (Neil Carr-Jones of Goose; see the web link above) about being able to drive our cars on the track. It will not be possible to go for a record though Carl, I'm afraid. Better I feel that as many Elan owners as possible get the chance to give their cars a couple of laps of the Grand Prix circuit and show 'em off to the other classic car nuts around the circuit - show those MGB and Spitfire chaps what they're missing!

If you google retrorun you`ll find for a nominal price, ?119 last year, you get entry for 2 people for 3 days, infield parking, a tulip run around the Cotswolds or wherever, and a couple of parade laps of Silverstone. Great value especially with the Friday and Saturday night`s concerts thrown in. We`ve done it for years.

I see from the latest Silverstone Classic mailing that AC Cobra seem to have a parade organised:

1962 was a very innovative year for car design and 50 years later we celebrate the anniversary of the MGB, AC Cobra, Lotus Elan, Triumph Spitfire & Ford Cortina. In particular the Cobra celebrations will be the official gathering for all AC Cobra and derivative owners. Expect to see 500 of them in a track parade as well as battling with the Ferraris and Jaguars in races.

There are special celebrations too for the Ferrari F40, Maserati Merak, TVR Car Club, Mercedes Benz Club, Marcus Owners Club, Renault Owners & the Chevy Camaro. Another new attraction is the BMW ?Z? Fest being staged for the first time in the UK.

True story:

My daughter bought me a mug for Christmas; it says "Lotus 1948-2008, 60 years".

It leaks.
