Information sought

Since the DVLA refuses to send any information over the pond...... I am seeking past history on LSS 742D, Series 3 FHC, originally white. According to Lotus archives, the car was sold to a W Hogg, and the reg # information that I have seen indicates that it may have been a Scotland car. The car was exported to the US sometime in the late 1970's.

If anyone has some history, or would be willing to help, I would be most grateful.

Mike

SS registration is from Aberdeen. Not sure who the dealer might have been; Sports-Tune Motor Co Ltd in Long Niddry, perhaps, or Dicksons Motors in Perth.

There is nor record on that registration on the DVLA site.

Thanks Tim. :)

As you may have seen in the other thread, I filed the v888 form with the DVLA to no avail. If they do have some information, they won't release it outside the UK.

The car also had a Len St Ltd sticker in the back window, so it probably changed hands a few times.

Can't you check the vin (36/####) against that list someone posted on the forum a few months back?

I have the list and it will probably only confirm the information Lotus has already released on the car, namely unit, engine nos and date of invoice.

Dredging up my own zombie thread. Having failed with the DVLA, and posted an ad in Club Lotus magazine, among other things, an esteemed member here suggested that I contact local council (East Lothian).

I have done this, and here is a snip of the return email:

In response to your enquiry of 7 April, I regret to inform you that East Lothian Council (ELC) does not hold any records relating to classic vehicles.

Early card indexes are held by the Kithead Trust, however, these predate this enquiry. Where ELC holds photographs showing early vehicles, the registration number is added but unfortunately there is nothing for your vehicle.

The 40 year search continues......

Not much information, sorry, but the Len St sticker is almost certainly Len Street, where Street is a name, not a road.
Len Street was a well-known Lotus dealer in London's West End in the sixties and later.

Mike,

192.com brings up a few W Hogg’s in Scotland. If you go into company check.co.uk and into Director Check that brings up a few companies/directors matching Scottish addresses. Big problem is people not only move about but pass on too.

Good luck with the continuing mission to boldly go...

Thanks Steve. I agree, after 54 years, Mr Hogg is likely very elderly, or no longer with us. Maybe he was one of those who quickly grew tired of parts falling off, and traded it off in short order, and never gave it another thought.

The car crossed the pond in the 70’s, and I still hold hope that a subsequent U.K. owner might stumble upon one of my inquiries . Haven’t given up just yet :)

I'm no expert in law so this is an idea rather than a recommendation!!
Do you have any trusted friends or relatives in the UK?
They could purchase the car for a nominal fee , say £1. They could then apply for the information on your behalf.
( and if they liked you, sell it back to you for a whole English pound)
I can't see any laundering enquiries if no profit is made. You will have an extra owner on the list of owners.

Hi, Graeme.
There may be a difficulty with your suggestion as the DVLA have stopped releasing any information about previous owners or history of vehicles to anyone. Privacy, you know!
I heard about this and could not believe what they were doing and guessed that it would not last. I sent my fiver and the 888 form off smartish with a trumped up `valid reason for requesting the information`and just in time.
They sent me details of all previous owners, addresses, post codes, sale dates and some copies of microfilm records.
Unfortunately, those days have gone.
Sorry,

Fair point, I hadn't realised, thanks.
When I sent mine off for the S4 it had some ex owner called Malcolm Ricketts!

I think that the DVLA was starting to do that some years ago. I tried to file the 888, they sent it back (and the 5), saying that information could not be released to non UK residents.
