Insurance (UK)

I am currently with AON (underwritten by Royal Sun Alliance) for my insurance and as it is renewal time again I have been reading the terms. Although I remember this from previous years it is still a bit of a shock and every year I think I must change companies and find a better policy. It says that as part of the garaging conditions: "Theft and malicious damage is excluded whilst the vehicle is left in the open outside the garaging or home address between the hours of 10pm and 6am"
In other words it isn't covered for theft if parked overnight anywhere other than in its garage e.g. basically when going anywhere.
Is this a common exclusion on other policies or is it just on mine. What price do others charge, who do you use?
Thanks.
Keith.

This is the same as mine, and most others probably.

You're mis-interpreting what it says - the car isn't covered when you park it ouside your house overnight when you've told them it can be garaged. If you go away on holiday for example, the car can't be garaged so is covered.

Basically it is to stop you leaving the car out rather then putting it away.

I thought it was a bit odd when I first noticed it, but then the premium is reduced a bit for having a garage so you should use it. Fair enough I suppose..

My insurance is due at the end of the month and I have done the usual annual trawl for quotations. My current broker is Carole Nash who sent a range of renewal quotes to me last week, and one was from Norwich Union, and they were the only one lited that did not have a garaging clause.
Interstingly, Norwich Union would not quote directly as I said ?YES? to the question ?Has the vehicle been modified?.

The issue of modifications affecting insurance was a thread a few weeks ago. http://www.lotuselan.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14983

I have arranged for carole Nash to get a full list of the known modications I have identified. I?m not sure I?m looking forward to hearing what they have to say.

Brian.

I'm in the same situation with Footman James. Lets keep each other informed of progress ?

I am in my second year with Towergate Hall & Clarke and am very pleased sofar. No problem with a fixed value, easy to deal with and much cheaper than Footman James.
I would never use Norwich Union again after my Alfa was written off and I had to deal with someone in Bangalore who couldn't speak english. Luckily the other guy admitted responsibility and his insurance dealt with it and paid out.
It seems easy to get cheap insurance these days but the crunch comes when you want to claim.

For your classic only deal with insurance companies who specialise in classics. I remember one interesting conversation with an insurance company while getting a quote. They wanted to know if an immobiliser was fitted. They could not understand that the Elan has no electronics of any type and an immobiliser fitted or not would be useless

With regard to an immobiliser - I just say "yes".

Whenever I leave my car unattended I simply take the key out of the battery switch.

Chris,

Thanks for the name Towergate Hall & Clarke - I contacted them and they were most helpful. I e-mailed a full list of all the 19 known modiciations to my car plus 2 I intend to do over the winter. They e-mailed back the following day to say that their technical department had accepted all the modifications. Cost ?112.90 - I will double check to confirm that it is the full package I asked for.

Elanfan1,

I didn't ask such a question because their heading was:

Towergate Underwriting Group Ltd T/A towergate hall and clarke
302 - 308 Preston Road, Harrow, Middlesex, HA3 0QP
Tel: 0870 990 6060 (Calls may be recorded) - Fax: 0870 990 6055

From what I've found so far, modifications are the main problem.

Quote 1 from Cherished Car (u/w Norwich U) is ?113.90 with guaranteed value, 5,000 miles, garaged overnight, and ?50 excess.

Add mods: 5inch wheels adjustable suspension all round, larger rad and uprated brakes ..........

Premium goes to ?137.80, and excess jumps to ?200

Will have to keep looking !

Stuart.

Chris - Allianz Cornhill and I believe NIG are on the schedule but I think I'm correct in saying NU are the main underwriters - I work for them (unfortuantely - I want to retire!!)

Now you are worrying me!

Towergate has confirmed that their scheme is jointly underwritten by Norwich Union, Allianz, & N.I.G. Iinsurance.

They also confirmed that breakdown cover is an extra ?28, making the total ?140.90.

I have to chase Carole Nash as their cover included breadown assistance.
