New Owner - South Florida

PostPost by: joesailor » Thu Dec 31, 2020 8:15 pm

]I have just purchased my first Lotus, a 1966 Elan S2, 26/5746 - I have relocated it from California where it has been all or most of its life to Florida. The car was restored about 30 years ago. No current projects planned other than maintaining the car and fixing a leaky clutch slave cylinder.

Very nice. Similar to a friend’s car back in the day. Welcome aboard.

Congrats! The leaky slave cylinder was my first project as well, 16 years ago. The rebuild kit is cheap, getting the circlip off and on again is a pain. I recommend getting a speedbleeder valve and stainless piping to master cylinder, if not already fitting. The slave cylinder gets very hot from the exhaust, fitting a heat shield will help it to last longer. Happy lotus ownership wishes to you! They are a lot of fun! Dan

Installing a remote-bleeder also makes life easier. There are threads elsewhere in the forum that detail how to do it, so I won't bore you with the details but basically you remove the bleeder from the slave and put it on the end of a line connected to the hole on the slave that it came out of. Pick a convenient place to put the remote bleeder; I ran it back up the firewall so that air bubbles have someplace to rise to.

Also in addition to the heat shield that is easy to make, I put a heat shield sleeve (available from sources such as Summit Racing or Pegasus Racing Supply) on the line from the master. I'll probably put on on the remote-bleed line too just to be on the safe(r) side.

Congrats Joe- what a lovely car and great color too. As a bonus, you have now solved any problem you may have had with excess spare time! My own Elan has done that over the last 3 years. Enjoy the journey- this website is an absolute gem for problem solving with a great bunch of owners willing to give advice freely to those of us less experienced with the nuances of these brilliant little cars.

Cheers and Happy Holidays,

Very nice, Joe. I know it doesn't rain in Florida but don't you need windscreen wipers to clear the flies off the screen, or don't you have flies either!

You're thinking of Southern California.

Southern Florida has rain, hurricanes, bugs, alligators, pythons, all kinds of trouble!

My mistake! Sounds like Southern England with added predators.

And heat and humidity beyond all sanity. I once made the mistake of booking a weekend-getaway in Miami for early June; HOLY CRAP was it hot and sticky! Thank goodness that my hotel room and rental-car both had really good aircon! Worth it though, as I got to see a lot of cool cars including the ski-rack Esprit from For Your Eyes Only, which lives in the Dezer Collection Museum down there.
