Newbie needs help with Elan Spares!

PostPost by: Cccazza » Sat Mar 17, 2018 8:33 pm

Hi everyone!
I?ve just joined as I wanted to ask for advice from some experts. I am trying to clear 2 garages and a workroom full of spare parts, the majority of which are Elan parts but there are some motorcycle parts too. My dad built a drop head Elan in 1966. He also bought another and then bought enough spare parts to build a third one, although never got around to it. Unfortunately he is too old and in ill health to do anything with it all now so I am trying to sort it out and can?t ask him what all the spares are. Can anyone advise on a manual I could get hold of to work out what everything is pls? Or is there anyone I can ask for advice with photos? Some things are obvious but I don?t know what quite a few things are! Thanks in advance :D

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your Dad. Sounds like you've quite a job on your hands. There might be folk on here that would make you an offer to clear it all or if you have time on your hands you could list it here or eBay. Listing it here gives the enthusiasts first go at stuff - you may not realise the best price but you don't end up paying 13/14% to eBay/PayPal.

You have a PM too

The part that you are listing as "perhaps for bonnet or boot" is the glove box touch latch, they are readily available and cheap.

Just post the photos on here if you are not sure what the parts are.

It might not be what you want to hear, but if you list parts on Ebay at ridiculous prices, you will forever be relisting them without any chance of selling them., e,g, second hand brake pads ?10, s/h headlamp rims ?20, new brake pads ?50, etc.

I think you are going to have to be a lot more realistic about your starting prices and indeed, if what you are listing is worth anything at all, but good luck.

But you have to admit , it was a good idea to post on here to increase the number of watchers/bidders...

it's always a bit bothering to see an ad where the seller does not know what he sells yet claims its absolute rarity and lists it for 10 times+ the price of a new equivalent... does not leave much room for ingenuousness in my book

Thanks for the advice everyone- I had done a bit of research on the coat hooks and had understood they were rare but happy to be corrected! This is all new to me - the reason I came on here was to find out more about all the boxes of stuff there is. I?ve tried to look at previous sold prices but not always easy to do a clear comparison! Thanks again everyone

Maybe before you get too far into a bunch of small item sales, perhaps set a weekend during which forum-members are welcome to come and rummage through it all amd make offers? Might clear a lot of stuff.

Some positive comments above. There are a few parts that are rare but many others that are being remanufactured or that can be procured with imagination, it is all a question of putting in the time and for old car owners, is part of the fun.

For example, I found my door locks by contacting a specialist scrapyard breaking a Austin Farina somewhere in Yorkshire and was delightfully helped by the owner. I bought them for ?85 including P&P and the door pillar latches having abandonned a bidding war at ?300 on Ebay...

I have bought quite a few parts on Ebay but discovered the very quickly but Ebay is not always easy to use and seems to have distinct "subdivisions" the reasons for which I have not understood. Ebay Germany seems to be sometimes cut off from the rest of the world...

For a mid 60s Elan, the only really tricky parts to find are for original seats, doors (locking mechanisms and handles) and rear braker calipers. Everything else is readily available if we exclude the occasional crises for glove box hinges.

As mentioned above, why not place your parts on line here ?
