Same thing as not allowing Chinese chip makers to make the critical parts of the new 5G Mobile-Phone network.

Government wants to ensure that chips vital to UK security don't have built-in hackers' "back-doors".

Imho the UK is correct to stop China in Wales. The only reason China want Taiwan back is to control Semi-Conductors.

The russian government is nationalist, they want Ukraine back, because it was once part (even origin) of the old Russia Empire (before USSR). And that would give them a strategic advantage in the black sea. So they started a (very stupid) war.
The chinese government is nationalist, they want Taiwan back because it was once part of the Chinese Empire. And that would give them a strategic advantage in the south china sea.

Starting a war to gain control over semiconductors would be a very, very stupid reason.
In a war, china destroys infrastructure, kills any willingness of operators and looses main markets, as for a start the West will not buy any chips from China. After a war, 5G chips are the least you really need ...

Imho China wants Taiwan for semi conductors that's all.
My brother inlaw went many times to Taiwan for semi-conductor business. A comodity that China needs.

Hi

I got back 2 years ago from a 10 year stink in HK. I was there for the umbrella uprising and also the major pre covid unrest. I even got tear gassed 3 times on my way home during that time.

The Chinese government play a long game. Not like us in the West where we plan for nothing and just go for the short term fix. They want HK because they consider it theirs. Destroying the economy of HK (or even their own) does not even really register on that long term plan. Same with Taiwan. We would be focussed on the semiconductors and the short term benefit, but they are not. They want Taiwan because it is part of China, and will be again one day. Simple and true.

Edit: I am only talking about the Chinese Government here. The average Chinese person is capable of the most ridiculously short term and self centred thinking. And this coming from someone who loves many aspects of China and Chinese culture. I'm due back early next year and really looking forwards to it.

About 90% of the most hi-tech semiconductor manufacturing (upon which the WHOLE WORLD depends) is in Taiwan, and the geographic strategic value for controlling the seas around there is absolutely significant. It's not one or the other that makes them want it, it's both.
