Golf - not me

I have wondered for quite a while that us guys who are car, motorcycle, diy and anything engineering are wired differently in the brain and don't do golf. I walk my dog on a nearby course and talk to the guys. No disrespect to golfers but I don't think I have come across someone who is a proper petrol head tinkerer that does golf.
Is there such a creature? I like to walk on there but could not be inspired to have a go.

I thought from the subject title that perhaps you had been on a test drive at your local VW dealer. I have a Golf and it's a great car for a runaround do everything workhorse.

My brother plays golf and has tried to get me along, but I don't have the slightest inclination. I'm far happier walking if I have leisure time.

My brother is a petrol head, but he can't tinker for a toffee. Give him a set of spanners and he will look for the power cord and USB input.

The wife keeps getting on to me. Why can't you take up golf like normal people instead of being scruffy all the time looking like Fred Dibnah.
I would be honoured to be like Fred.

Not for me I'm afraid. As they say with relationships the opposite of love isn't hate but indifference and that's where I am with golf - indifference. Others in the family though are of the opposite persuasion and over the years various attempts have been made to pull the scales from my eyes so I can see what I'm missing. My stock response used to be that as I'm left handed I couldn't use normal clubs so 'I'll sit this one out', but some years ago what did I get for Christmas - a set of left handed clubs! They're up in the loft, still in their original packaging. Every time I look at them there's a twinge of guilt even as I wonder if I could get some Elan bits if I sold them

It's not as if I haven't been exposed to it. When I was working in the corporate entertainment world I spent many days over many years on golf courses and had 'lunchtime lessons' from a number of big names in the golf firmament but any sparks those episodes generated never went anywhere. I'm not anti golf and I can see others enjoy it but, like visiting my local Waitrose, I end up choosing other ways to pass my time.

There are some things that are so uncool they become, in a strange way, cool, but golfing is not one of them. Golf is so irretrievably uncool that it comes with its own anti-fashion, including sun visors, horrendous shoes, and shirts with insurance company logos on them. For men, a devotion to golf often indicates a wholesale embrace of middle age, the putting aside of childish things like not being fat or caring about what sort of jumpers you put on. For women, a sudden devotion to golf is often a sign that you have, for reasons best known to yourself, married someone much older than you. Having established that golf is transcendentally uncool, we must concede that it is popular nevertheless. For non-golfers the point of the game has always been a bit of a mystery. It doesn't, on the face of it, look like much fun. It is not, as any non player who has visited a golf course will testify, generally played by the sort of people one wants to hang out with. And yet still people succumb to it. We may conclude from this that golf is in some way addictive. The evidence is certainly there: a staggering proportion of the game's celebrity adherents have been sequestered for addiction treatment in the past. It's astonishingly popular among party-animal rockers who, through no fault of their own, have accidentally lived past 30. Add to this the fact that it’s on a par with darts in terms of physical exertion, and you have a perfect sport for a whole generation of people who forgot to die in a hotel room in the 1990s, and are consequently at a loose end. It would be a harmless way of keeping them out of the way if only it weren’t such an inefficient use of space. If we could only get them interested in deck quoits, then we could house the lot of them in a space the size of a tennis court.

It's a pretty easy decision for me, having at one time a love for golf that got replaced by a love of British Cars.

But simply, I have three British Cars, that all require a loving touch of maintenance practically daily.. I therefore have no time for golf. Besides, the beer is far more affordable at home.

I used to play golf regularly. About six times a year. My clubs were my handicap.

It is one of those games you need to spend an awful lot of time practicing to become anywhere near competent. In the end I decided I much preferred to spend my time racing yachts, which I still do.

At the risk of sounding snobbish, I also found the many rather petty rules surrounding the game and its conduct to be lauded by the sort of folk who, on the whole (or should that be hole?), I would avoid. Whereas, I have a very wide circle of friends and acquaintances in the sailing world, many of whom are petrolheads too.

I once heard a comedian opine that golf isn't a sport, golf is men in bad trousers walking. My addition to that is that it definitely isn't a sport, because the traditional definition of 'sport' is a recreational activity in which the participant stands a reasonable chance of being killed while doing said activity.

As for the four-mile walk carrying clubs, over here in the USA the overwhelming majority of players use motorized carts provided by the course facility. They're less fun to drive than a Lotus.

And if it's a nice-enough day to chase a little ball around, then it's definitely a nice-enough day to take the Lotus or the motorbike (I have both) for a jaunt.

Nothing against golfers, to each their own said the lady as she kissed the cow. If avarybody drove sports cars or motorbikes the road would be a horrible mess so I'm all for people having different hobbies!
