scam buyer?

PostPost by: bitsobrits » Thu Sep 06, 2018 3:16 am

I have received two emails in the last 7 months from a guy named Ian who says he is looking to buy an Elan S1. Claims he got my contact info from the Elan registry, which is impossible as it only lists my first name and city, no email.

Also seems quite weird to me that he would reach out directly to an individual rather than go on a forum such this one to find a car.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

I love the sound of a torque wrench in the morning. Sounds like... progress.

The person is a member of the forum, but we do not make emails available. You indicated the person pulled the email from the registry. The registry is different than this site.

I presume privacy will be an issue but there appears to be a discrepancy in that one of our members above says he?s near him in the US and yet the other info puts him in the UK. There?s something awry. We don?t want long term members scammed but neither should a genuine member be wrongly labelled. Maybe as a Jeff knows the members details an attempt to clarify might be in order?? Maybe?

The person is restoring an Elan and has posted pics online. The person appears to be active on both sides of the pond. This info discussing activity in the US and the UK is listed in the posts.

If it is a scam, it is an ongoing effort online for 6+ months. My view it looks legit. As always, be wary the first time you transact with anyone online.
