Lotus Elan

Paint Specification

PostPost by: terryp » Fri Mar 23, 2018 7:50 am

Hello
Last time I posted on here was regarding the referendum, well I hope you have all taken back control and have your pet unicorn in the garden.

Anyway a car question for 1965 vintage fibreglass.......

I have been told that I need to use Polyester spray filler, then Epoxy Primer (Max Meyer 1-841-8700). The problem is the top coat.
I intend to get the car sprayed in Metalic Jaguar Opalesent silver blue but which specification of paint/laquer will be best to work with the primer?

Thanks

Terry

Yes hopefully , the local paint sprayer who does boats!
Congratulations! We need to get French Nationally at least for the children otherwise they will be at a disadvantage and may have problems in the future. I still struggle with the language and I believe the test is very tough, so will wait an see, I suspect we will be thrown under that big red bus.

Terry, what happened about the Glacier Blue? Was it too hard to find, or is the Jaguar colour more posh than Ford?

Kev
I found out that the Jaguar blue (very similar to your blue) was an original Ginetta colour :-)

Have you bought another car yet?

Hello Terry,
last year I painted two fibreglass cars and used Epoxy primer to the fibreglass first. nothing can come up or down through this coating so will prevent moisture passing from the laminate. If painted later the same day or next day at air temperature then no sanding is required and it will take a few coats of 2k primer. 2k primer is very easy to sand with modern dry abrasive pads and will level up really good . Any type of topcoat will take to this finish Ie cellulose, basecoat laquer or 2k single colour.
If you use polyester primer then be careful to measure the ingredients accurately because i stripped a car which had polyester primer painted at least 10 years ago and once the top paint layer had been removed I could smell the sweet smelling ester resin which had not fully reacted. I could possibly blame this ester evaporation to cause bubbles in the topcoat !!

Thanks Tony, so providing the paint sprayer uses epoxy primer , he can use anything on top. Its France so it could be anything!

Sorry but,
in France the Garages have to use water based paint and can not use anything else by Law.
Unless it is a Classic Car in which there is a derogation to use the same as original.
That is according to the FFVE.
My 1973 +2S130 Carnival Red which i a drove to your place for the Elan +2 assembly was water based paint.
Many of the others said the paint was very good
