VISIT NEW ZEALAND 2018 FEB MARCH

PostPost by: alan.barker » Wed Jul 12, 2017 8:24 am

We will be visiting New Zealand in 2018 during Feb and March. Based at Paraparaumu.
Please do any of you who live in NZ have info on any car meetings in 2018.
I have an Elan Sprint + TVR 3000S + TVR 3000M so i am well into classic cars.
It would be nice to have a chat and look at some cars during the NZ visit.
Thanks in advance

The Southward Car Museum generally has a "visit behind the scenes" day about then.
Free entry for people who turn up in their classic car so generally quite a good turn out.
Took my Sprint a few years back and probably should do it again.
Might see you there !

Cheers,
Ralph.

Hi Ralph,
my family live in Paraparaumu near the Southward Museum and i last visited in 2013. There was a big meet at Southward Museum which i went to. I think i might have spoken to you, is this your car.
I missed a big car meet just south of Auckland at i think a Horse race course "classic cars". I was at "Angler's Lodge" Coromandel doing some fishing.

No Alan, we didn't speak, and that's not my car, though it is the same colours.
Get back to me nearer the time and I can give you my rego number, and mobile number so if you see my car there you can give me a call.
Ralph.

A great museum, well worth a visit, we went there is 2005. No Elan I seem to remember but there was an Esprit!!

If you go anywhere near Napier, there is an amazing British car museum just outside town. It's just a massive barn full of British cars from the 1950s to the 1970s!

hi Alan

On Sunday 11 February 2018 over 700 owners representing over 70 classic car clubs will gather at Ellerslie Race Course to share their enthusiasm, promote their clubs, and celebrate motoring as we knew it over the decades.

Hi Robin,
Ellerslie is now on the list for Feb 11th and the next day scenic train from Auckland down to Wellington.
Will try to do overnight stay at Kapiti Island also.

I can agree that the Southward museum is a must see.
If you are going over to the south island, and I would say that is a must, I'd like to put in my recommendation for Peter Jackson's Omaka 1st WW air museum in Blenheim. That is if you have an interest in such things. Amazing stuff. That is along with the amazing south island! And of course, Burt Munro's land speed record motorcycles in Invercargill. ["Worlds Fastest Indian"]

The last time we visited we went to see Burt Munros fastest indian in the hardward shop at Invercargil, fantastic visit.
This time we will be staying on the north Island. My sister lives at Paraparaumu next to Southwards.
Can't wait for the visit :D

The hardware shop is a little loose with the truth on Burt's bike as Burt never actually brought his bike back from the States.
Due to freight costs he only ever brought the engine back so he could work on it before the next attempt.

Southwards is certainly worth a visit.
First met Sir Len, or Len as he was then, 40 years ago when a mate and I went looking for this "car museum".
He hadn't actually built it yet but still graciously showed us around some big sheds full of amazing cars, including the Indianapolous Stutz, in pieces, on the floor, having been rescued from duty as a hay rake on a farm somewhere !
We were asked not to mention the visit as he wasn't ready for hordes of visitors.

One of his sons, John, lives about 25 kilometres from here and has obviously inherited a keen eye for a good car.
How do I know that ?
Well, apart from his Bugatti his vehicular weapon of choice for the "Art Deco" car rally that's held here in Napier once a year is a Squire......
Beat that !
