What is this?

Can anyone i.d. this little light? What's it used for? Who/what cars were they on? The length is 2 1/4" and the diameter is 2 inches. Just a cool little piece.
Even the bracket is marked with the LEP logo.
I know this is not a Lotus part, which is why I'm posting in the Free Parking section.
Thanks

It looks like a wing light, one you would mount on top of the wing of a car that perhaps didn't have side lights I'm not sure if they were ever original equipment or just one of those strange quirky accessories you could buy in the 1950's and 60's
Here's some other examples on good old Ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-LEP-Wing-Lights-/331485799467?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4d2e17e42b

Looks as if it could be one of those angled lights used by long distance race cars, which lit the car's race number on each door.

I like Tim's theory that it is a down lighter for a 24 hour race car ID number, you would get loads of interest advertising it on EBay as a classic Le Mans piece of history
Just put a few unrelated pictures of British Le Mans racers in the advert.
A lamp for a motorcycle number plate is also a good one as proposed by Simon and probably nearer the truth.
