"you know your spitfire has a tractor engine" (I think you mean a tr and maybe even then no)
"It has the same chassis as the Herald" (spitfire, no it doesn't)
"that's definitely a Porsche" (dad to son)
"the exhaust should run between the body and the chassis" (Triumph spitfire, absolutely impossible)
"the car has a motolite steering wheel"
"that's an mg"
"from the same factory that made Jaguars and MG's" (talking about a TR6)
"lots of trouble usually serious"
"simply add lightness"
and I'm the chump that stands there and pretends to agree.

"That's a Porsche colour"! (Anorak at car show referring to my L09 Royal Blue +2)
Err, wrong! Maybe Porsche used the same or a similar colour, but L09 is an original LOTUS factory colour......
No mate, my Dad had one so I know what I'm talking about.....
Did he have a Lotus Elan +2 or Porsche whatever then?......
I can't remember, but it was definitely blue!

True comment by 2 of my neighbors on different occasions.
"I didn't think Miata's were that small"
"I like you MG" (neighbor) "it's actually not an MG but a Lotus" (me) "Hey Ben did you see Russ's MG?" (neighbor)
At that point I just shrugged my shoulders as they both looked at the Lotus badge.

I was in France's in the early 80s parked up in a layby having the tradional frites, when a man came over tapped the front wing of my +2 with his knuckle and said "polyester" alpine renault "tres Bon" (please excuse my spelling if incorrect) well 30years later I wish it was a A110 judging by the price they command

Well the design was, even if the finished article was 100% Buckinghamshire !!

A fellow at a car show here in the US informed me that Lotus was owned by Ford and the engine in my old Turbo Esprit was a Ford engine. Oddly, when asked by me, he couldn't tell me which model Ford came with that engine in it.......

Overheard a old gentleman at a recent classic car show, he was showing his wife my Elan M100 and proudly advised here that this was the Lotus Espace.
I'm still trying to find the extra 5 seats

When they get it wrong as they usually do I just answer " Why, yes it is!" and go about my merry way!

Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera styled the DB4 DB5 DB6 from memory, the Superleggera down the bonnet gives it away
