So in these instances when there has been no other bids I thought it was safe to do an opening bid, what i should have done was to make it 99P and not bid up to ?5 or whatever.
I generally place a low early bid on something I'm interested in and then watch the auction for a couple of days to get the feel for how it's going. If I feel it's worth a punt, I then transfer to my sniping system so that a bid is automatically placed (no waiting in and no one can disturb!). The reason for placing the low opening bid is so that my name is on the bidders list, although sniping is legal and okay with ebay, some sellers get a little miffed if they think you are sniping, normally they are the less than scrupulous sellers!
