The water test won't work if sticks are hollow. There is no way of telling thickness of tube so no way of working out density based on water displacement. A hollow aluminium stick of the same external dimension as a stainless steel stick will displace the same amount of water, assuming they both sink.

As aluminium is approx half the weight of steel, simply holding them should be sufficiant to be able to tell what they are made of, I would have thought.

I prefer bamboo chop sticks ... they are lighter to wear in the hair and retieve the severed head of a vanquished enemy in an easier fashion ....there are also special models of chop sticks for cleaning out cat litter boxes ....I dont use them ...ever .......originally called kui tzu or quick ones the sticks became chop pidgen english for quick thus chop sticks ...lotus designers came up with magesium sticks but they caught on fire on occasion from cigars and open flame braziers and burned down many Chineese restaurants in the 1960 s so we wentback to aspen wood ....there was also the legend of a famous Samuri who defended his castle against a hoard of Government accountants with a chopstick in one hand and a bent book keeper in the otherj....ed

Aye, you are only really interested in finding out if the density is near as dammit to Aluminium or common alloys.

I don't think they would bother to make hollow aluminium ones.

If density is not near, then they are probably hollow s/s.
